Research Associate- MCG Physiology
Job Summary
This position provides administrative and technical oversight in a cardiorenal research laboratory in the Department of Physiology. Responsibilities include ensuring research protocols are followed and met; safety guidelines are followed in accordance with institution and government regulations; management of laboratory resources; providing teaching and technical oversight to trainees and research staff; processing of data, presents findings and assists Principle Investigator (PI) with current and future research applications and programs of study; and coordinates administrative and technical arrangements of animal models and maintain records related to use.
The successful candidate will join a NIH-funded project (PI, Dr. Fan Fan) and investigate how genetic-based microvascular dysfunction in aging, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity contributes to end-organ damage, including vascular cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD), and renal disease. The lab also focuses on studying the contribution of changes in the actin cytoskeleton in vascular cells to the hemodynamics in cerebral and renal circulation, as well as changes in the actin cytoskeleton in podocytes in glomerular function.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities to include but not limited to:
- Lab Management: Coordinates research activities in the lab and instructs research staff and students and advises regarding research techniques.
- Animal Management: Coordinates administrative and technical arrangements of animal models and maintains records related to use. Performs animal colony maintenance and surgical procedures such as injections, gavage and euthanasia. Assist PI with animal protocols preparation and submission.
- Experiments: Performs complex data analysis related to producing research results and preparing findings for future development and develops new studies in coordination with the PI. Plans research protocols and controls the proper execution of the research plans by other laboratory staff. Analyzes data and prepares publication-ready figures.
- Fiscal Management: Participates in the tracking and monitoring of budgetary resources to ensure effective lab operations. Interface with vendors and administration regarding order tracking and invoices/payments.
- Safety and Compliance: Uses independent judgement in the daily operations of the lab to ensure safe and efficient use of resources. Monitors use of resources to ensure compliance with federal guidelines and institutional protocols.
- Grant Development: Assists PI with data preparation for grant applications and renewals. Participate actively in the composition, editing and publication of research findings.
- Other: Performs other duties incidental to work described herein.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in research, basic science or clinical laboratory particularly clinical trial research. OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience; previous supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE: Background in biology, chemistry and/or biochemistry. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS: Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented.
ABILITIES: Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work independently with only general supervision, prioritize tasks, and complete work while meeting deadlines. Ability and willingness to work with research animals.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required). Salary Range: $45,400-$56,700 annually.
