Research Associate
Overview
Carries out research assignments for a large or multi-faceted research project. Performs independent research, experiments, and laboratory techniques. Responsible for the daily operation of a specialized laboratory within a department, and related data analysis for research projects.
The Kaufman laboratory has a long history of investigating the evolution of immunity, focusing mainly on the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) along with related systems (TCR, NKR, complement), and primarily in chickens among a wide range of organisms (Tasmanian devils, rabbits, bats, passerine birds). The lab has always used a range of techniques from genes, genetics and genomics, to molecular biology, biochemistry and structural biology, to cellular immunology, whole animal experiments and now population biology.
After decades in Europe and the United Kingdom, a new lab is being set up in the renowned Department of Immunobiology at Yale University. This first position will be involved in helping to set up and then manage this new laboratory as the group grows, as well as carrying out research under the supervision of the PI. Among the techniques to be used will cell culture, biochemistry, molecular biology and flow cytometry, with new approaches adopted as appropriate. In addition to projects in non-mammalian vertebrates, the lab intends to investigate genes, molecules and cells in humans and mice, including taking advantage of the transgenic mouse models of human disease for which the Department of Immunobiology is so well known.
