Offer Description
Call for Applications for a Research Scholarship (BI) for Master's Students in Criminology, under the project “Predatory publishing practices: Paper tigers or actual threats from evaluation systems?”, at the Faculty of Law, University of Porto (FDUP)
Applications are now open for a Research Scholarship for students enrolled in a Master's program in Criminology, under the project “Predatory publishing practices: Paper tigers or actual threats from evaluation systems?” ongoing at the CIJ - Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Justice at the Faculty of Law, University of Porto (FDUP), funded by own funds through international funds of Volkswagen Foundation, under the following conditions:
1. Research area/s: Criminology.
2. Admission requirements:
To apply for the research studentship, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:
- a) Bachelor's degree in Criminology;
- b) To be a student enrolled in a master programme in the area of Criminology (this requirement must be proven at the time of contracting)
3. Preferred requirements:
- a) Experience in scientific research.
- b) Experience in conducting semi-structured interviews and analyzing qualitative data;
- c) Advanced knowledge of English (spoken, written, and read);
- d) Teamwork experience.
4. Work Plan:
The purpose of this contract is to perform the following tasks:
- Conducting literature reviews and writing technical reports;
- Supporting the conduction and transcription of interviews planned in Work Package 4;
- Assisting in analysing the data obtained from the interviews;
- Supporting various Work Packages, including participating in work meetings, interpreting results, and organising scientific events;
- Supporting the dissemination of knowledge through international scientific communications and co-authoring scientific articles.
5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:
Research Scholarship Statute - Law No. 40/2004, of August 18; the University of Porto Research Scholarship Regulation – Regulation 582/202, of may 19; subsidiarily, FCT, I.P. Research Scholarship Regulation - Regulation No. 950/2019, of November 29; Legal Regime for the Recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions - Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16; Administrative Procedure Code (CPA) - Decree-Law No. 4/2015, of January 7.
6. Workplace:
The work plan will be developed at the CIJ – Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Justice at the Faculty of Law, University of Porto, and/or other locations necessary for implementation of the work plan, under the scientific supervision of Professor Doctor Rita Faria, Assistant Professor at FDUP and co-PI of the Project.
7. Duration:
The studentship will have a duration of 12 months, on an exclusive dedication basis, possibly renewable, for the same or different periods, following a positive evaluation, in accordance with institutional needs and financial availability, up to the limit of the execution period of the work plan or financing; however, under no circumstances may it last longer than two years.
8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:
8.1. The monthly maintenance allowance for the studentship is 1090,98 €, in accordance with Annex I of the Research Grants Regulation of the University of Porto.
8.2. Payment will be made by FDUP by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the studentship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8.3. The studentship holder can join the Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme (valid for a studentship contract of six months or more), which is optional and the reimbursement corresponds to the 1st step of the contribution base.
9. Evaluation methods:
9.1. The selection methods are as follows: curricular assessment (AC – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 75% and, optionally, complemented by an interview carried out in English (ENT – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 25%, which will only take place when the Jury considers that the AC does not allow it to clarify, in the intended manner, the real skills of the candidates or to distinguish which candidate is best suited to the position and functions to be performed. If this is the case, the interview will be carried out with the 6 (six) candidates best classified in the AC.
9.2. Each member of the Jury will assess the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
9.3. The final score will be obtained using the formula: 0.75 x AC + 0.25 x ENT, on a scale of 0 to 20 points. If no ENT exists, the final score will be equal to the AC score.
9.4. Factors for the Curricular Assessment (scale from 0 to 20 points) are:
- a) Academic outcomes (75% - on a scale from 0 t0 20 points)
- Academic record (degree classification) - PA, weighted at 75%.
- Bachelor's degree with 240 ECTs (25%)
If the candidate holds a degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution and does not present the respective recognition of the diploma and conversion of the final classification by a Portuguese higher education institution by the deadline for submitting applications, they will be classified in this sub-criterion with a score of 10 points.
- b) Experience in scientific research (25%, on a scale from0 to 20 points)
- Participation in research activities (40%);
- Producing scientific papers or technical reports (30%)
- Presenting at scientific conferences (30%)
9.5. Factors for the Selection Interview in English (scale of 0 to 20 points), should it be held, will be:
- a) Experience in conducting semi-structured interviews and analysing qualitative data (Exp) (40%);
- b) Advanced knowledge of English (spoken, written, and read) (CI) (30%);
- c) Motivation and availability (M) (30%).
9.6. If none of the candidates demonstrates to have the necessary profile for executing the work plan, the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship.
10. Selection panel:

- Substitute member – Doutor Pedro Sousa, Faculdade de Direito da Universidade do Porto.
11. Submission of applications:
11.1. The applications must be submitted until 28 August 2026 at 23:59 (Lisbon local time).
11.2. Candidates need to access and register in the platform https://www.apply.up.pt for the submission of application, by selecting the process, Ref.ª BOLS-FDUP-26-5.
11.3. Application must be submitted with documents proving the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:
- a) Curriculum Vitae in English, with full name and email;
- b) Copy of the required Academic Qualification Certificates to prove the minimum admission requirement listed in point 2 (a)
- c) If necessary, a recognition of the academic degree (if obtained from a Foreign Higher Education Institution – to be provided by the hiring date), to prove the minimum admission requirement listed in point 2 (a);
- d) Proof of enrolment in a Master's degree course (to be submitted before the date of recruitment), to prove compliance with the minimum admission requirements indicated in point 2(b);
- e) Statement of eligibility (in accordance with the draft attached to this notice – Annex I).
- f) Any other documents that the candidates consider to be relevant when assessing their merit.
11.4 Failure to provide the documents listed in (a), (b), and (e) will result in the exclusion of candidates
11.5. Documents may be compacted into zip, rar, or 7z formats
11.6. For the assessment of applications, no links offered by the candidates will be considered, except links to scientific publications with DOI or similar.
11.7. Documents listed in item 11.3. must be submitted in a non-editable format.
11.8. Whenever deemed necessaty, the jury may ask the candidates for aditional documents to prove facts invoked in the CV, setting up a date for that purpose and on the following situatiosns:
- a) when the documents are not intended to support documentation referred to in the CV nor mandatory documentation according to this Call;
- b) when all the candidates are informed that additional documentation was requested.
12. Information of results
12.1. Candidates will be notified of results by means of the Apply UP platform, according to articule 112.º, n. 1, c) of CPA and producing effects according to article 113.º CPA.
12.2. According to articles 121.º and following of CPA, after the notifcation candidates will havbe 10 working days to comment the results in writing.
13. False statements:
False statements made by candidates will be penalised in accordance with the law.
14. Booking list:
A booking list will be drawn up on the basis of the final ranking list, which may be used in the event of the first-placed candidate withdrawing. The Faculty's highest authority reserves the right to call the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.

If the academic degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16, which approves the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and article 4(2)(e) of Decree-Law no. 60/2018, of August 3, and any formalities set out therein must be fulfilled by the date of the act of hiring.
At the time of signing the contract, the candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a Master's program in Criminology.
