CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE AWARD OF 1 (ONE) RESEARCH GRANT (RG) IN THE FIELDS OF CRIMINOLOGY WITHIN THE FACTCHECK PROJECT (REF. COMPETE2030-FEDER-00789100) CARRIED OUT AT THE “INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH CENTER OF THE SCHOOL OF CRIMINOLOGY - CRIME, JUSTICE, AND SECURITY (CJS)” OF THE FACULTY OF LAW OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO (FDUP) - BOLS-FDUP-26-4
An open call is hereby announced for the award of a Research Grant (RG) to a student enrolled in a master’s program in the field of Criminology to conduct R&D activities as part of the “I.PLACING” project, (Ref. COMPETE2030-FEDER-00789100), funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Innovation and Digital Transition Program (COMPETE 2030) and by National Funds (FCT) under Call No. MPr-2023-12, under the following conditions:

2. Admission requirements:
All individuals of legal age who meet the following requirements, evidenced by documentary proof, may apply:
- Bachelor's Degree in Criminology;
- Formal enrolment in a master’s program in the field of criminology — a requirement that must be duly verified at the time of hiring.
3. Preferred conditions:
- a) Solid knowledge of scientific methodologies to be used in the project (laboratory, quantitative and qualitative);
- b) Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data analysis;
- c) Experience conducting literature reviews;
- d) Publication of at least one scientific article or chapter;
- e) Knowledge of English—spoken and written, preferably at the B2 level or higher;
- f) Participation in Research & Development (R&D) projects.
4. Work plan:
4.1. The fellow will assist the project team in carrying out the tasks described in the application and will also collaborate on other activities, provided they are aligned with the project’s objectives, specifically by assisting with the following tasks:
- a) Assisting with a literature review on urban insecurity;
- b) Collaborating on the development of a questionnaire;
- c) Conducting, under supervision, data collection using eye-tracking;
- d) Collaborating on the statistical analysis of the collected data;
- e) Providing support for the collection and analysis of qualitative data through semi-structured interviews;
- f) Participation in the preparation of research outputs;
- g) Participation in activities to disseminate the knowledge produced (assistance in preparing written documents and in preparing and presenting papers).
4.2. When the academic degree or diploma is awarded during the grant contract, it may continue if the activities foreseen in the work plan have not been completed and under the terms specifically provided for in the call notice and in the contract, under no. 6 of Article 10 of the Regulation.
5. Applicable legislation and regulations:
This call and the award of the grant are governed by the provisions of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004 of 18 August, in its current wording published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019 of 28 August; the University of Porto Research Grant Regulation – approved by Regulation no. 184/2021, published in Diário da República, 2nd Series, no. 43, of 3 March; the legal regime for recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015 of 7 January; and other applicable rules.
6. Place of work:
The work will be carried out at the CIJ, the Research Center of the University of Porto’s School of Law and/or other locations necessary for its execution, under the scientific supervision of Professor Carla Sofia de Freitas Lino Pinto Cardoso, Associate Professor at the FDUP and a researcher on the project.
7. Duration of the grant:
The fellowship will last for 12 (twelve) months, with an estimated start date of September 2026. The scholarship contract, which is exclusive, may be renewed for equal or different periods, depending on institutional needs and financial availability, up to the maximum duration of the project; under no circumstances may it exceed the limits defined in the Regulations for the type of scholarship in question.
8. Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance:
8.1. The grant amount is € 1 090,98 per month, according to the table of grant values awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal.
8.2. Payment will be made by the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the grantee will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8.3. The grantee may join the Voluntary Social Security scheme (valid for grant contracts of six months or more). It is optional and reimbursement corresponds to the 1st bracket of the contributory base.
9. Selection methods:
9.1. The selection methods are: curriculum assessment (CA), weighted at 75%, optionally complemented by an interview (INT), weighted at 25%. The interview will only take place when the Jury considers that the CA does not clarify, as intended, the candidates’ real competences or does not allow distinguishing which candidate best fits the position and duties to be performed.
If held, the interview will be conducted with the 3 (three) candidates best ranked in the CA.
9.2. Each member of the Jury assesses the selection methods and their criteria on a scale from 0 to 20 points.
9.3. Criteria and weighting factors forCurriculum Assessment (CA):
- Final Bachelor’s Degree (L) Grade (75%).
The final Bachelor’s Degree (BG) grade is weighted (W) based on the number of ECTS credits corresponding to the degree program (see notice).
If an applicant submits a foreign diploma that has not been recognized, or that has been recognized but without the final grade converted to the Portuguese grading scale (0–20 points) by the application deadline, the applicant will receive a score of 10 points.
- CV Evaluation (25%), specifically:
- Relevant training in the field of criminology (0 to 20 points): 10%
- Publication of at least one scientific article or chapter, or presentation of a paper at a scientific conference (0 to 20 points): 15%
i) Training Programs in Criminology (education completed within the last 3 years)
- No training – 0 points
- Up to 4 hours of training – 12 points
- 5 to 12 hours of training – 16 points
- More than 13 hours – 20 points
ii) Publication of at least one scientific article or chapter, or presentation of a paper at a scientific conference
- No publications or presentations: 0 points
- One presentation at a scientific conference and no publications: 12 points
- More than one presentation at a scientific conference and no publications: 14 points
- One publication: 16 points
- More than one publication: 18 points.
- At least one publication and more than one presentation: 20 points
9.4. Candidates who receive a score of less than 10 (ten) points will be eliminated during the CA phase.
9.5. Criteria and weighting factors for the interview (INT), should it be carried out:
a) Knowledge of the scientific and ethical requirements of research (10%): Poor – 0 points; Sufficient – 10 points; Good – 14 points; Very good – 16 points; Excellent – 20 points.
b) Motivation to execute the work plan and pursue the project’s objectives (20%): Poor – 0 points; Sufficient – 10 points; Good – 14 points; Very good – 16 points; Excellent – 20 points.
c) Knowledge of the topic of urban insecurity and its related issues (20%): Poor – 0 points; Sufficient – 10 points; Good – 14 points; Very good – 16 points; Excellent – 20 points.
d) Oral expression skills in Portuguese and English (20%): Poor – 0 points; Sufficient – 10 points; Good – 14 points; Very good – 16 points; Excellent – 20 points.
e) Knowledge of questionnaire design and administration, conducting semi-structured interviews and data analysis (20%): Poor – 0 points; Sufficient – 10 points; Good – 14 points; Very good – 16 points; Excellent – 20 points.
f) Knowledge of laboratory methodologies and techniques, particularly eye-tracking studies and their applications to urban insecurity (10%): Poor – 0 points; Sufficient – 10 points; Good – 14 points; Very good – 16 points; Excellent – 20 points.
The interview score will be calculated according to the following formula:
INT = ((0,10 × a)) + (0,20 × b)) + (0,20 x c)) + (0,20 × d)) + (0,20 × e)) + (0,10 x f)), on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
9.6. Candidates may request authorization from the President of the Jury for the interview to be conducted by videoconference, stating the reasons for this request.
9.7. Failure to attend the interview phase of the selection process is equivalent to withdrawal from the call, and candidates will be excluded.
9.8. The Final Classification (FC) will be obtained by applying the following formula:
If there is an interview: Final Classification = (0,75 x CA) + (0,25 x INT)
If no interview is held: Final Classification = the score obtained in the CA.
9.9. Candidates who receive a score of 10 (ten) points or less on the FC, will be eliminated.
9.10. This call is intended exclusively to fill the indicated vacancy. If no candidate demonstrates the profile required to perform the work plan described above within this project, the Jury reserves the right not to award the position.

11. Publication/notification of results and application procedure:
11.1. Applications must be submitted by 23h59 of 28th August 2026 (local time – Lisbon).
11.2. Candidates must access and register on the electronic platform https://www.apply.up.pt to submit their application, selecting the procedure for which they intend to apply (Ref.ª. BOLS-FDUP-26-4). The application is completed by filling in the sections available on the APPLY UP platform under “My application”.
11.3. The application must be accompanied by the supporting documents required under this Notice, namely:
- Curriculum vitae;
- A copy of the certificate(s) for the required qualifications, specifying the final grade, along with official recognition of the degree and conversion of the grade to the Portuguese grading scale if the degree was obtained from a foreign institution of higher education (the recognition may be submitted by the time of hiring; however, failure to submit the grade conversion at the time of application means that the grade will not be considered for the purposes of academic evaluation. If the documents proving the degree submitted by candidates do not include the final grade for the degree required in the Notice, along with the corresponding grade converted to the Portuguese grading scale, the selection committee will consider that the candidate possesses the minimum grade required to obtain the degree in Portugal, pursuant to Article 16(4) of Regulation No. 184/2021 of the University of Porto;
- Proof of enrollment in a master’s program in the field of criminology (to be submitted by the time of hiring).
- Declaration of eligibility (in accordance with the template attached to this call for applications).
11.4. In addition to the documents listed in the preceding section, applicants must also submit documents proving that they meet the eligibility criteria set forth in section 3 of this notice, namely:
- Document proving proficiency in a foreign language (English) at a minimum B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, when applicable;
- Certificate(s) of training in the field of Criminology (training completed within the last 3 years), if applicable;
- Documents attesting to scientific research experience, where applicable;
- Publication of at least one scientific article or chapter, or presentation of a paper at a scientific conference;
11.5. Candidates may also attach any other documents they deem relevant for the assessment of their merit.
11.6. Failure to comply with the application deadline, or failure to submit - or late submission of - the documents referred to in points 11.3 a) to d), results in the exclusion of the application.
11.7. Documents may be submitted in compressed folder formats (zip, rar, 7z).
11.8. For evaluation purposes, no documents whose access is provided through links will be considered, except those that refer to publications with a DOI.
12. False statements:
False statements made by candidates will be punished under the law.
13. Publication/notification of results:
13.1. Notifications are carried out by publication on the Apply UP electronic platform, under item (c) of no. 1 of Article 112 of the CPA, producing effects under Article 113 of the CPA.
13.2. Under Articles 121 et seq. of the CPA, once notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit a written statement.
14. Reserve list:
A reserve list will be drawn up based on the final ranking list and may be used in the event the candidate ranked first withdraws. The highest authority of the Faculty reserves the right to call the next-ranked candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. Use of this reserve list may occur for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.

Any formalities established therein must be completed by the date of the hiring act.
- At the time the contract is signed, the applicant must provide proof that he or she is enrolled in a master’s program in criminology.
