Offer Description
A call is open for the award of one Research Fellowship (BI), for a period of 12 months, possibly renewable, intended for master’s students, integrated master’s students, bachelor’s degree holders or master’s degree holders enrolled in non-degree awarding courses, within the scope of the research project “Moinhos Vivos: um encontro entre património e conservação da biodiversidade fluvial”, funded by Fundação “la Caixa” and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), through national funds, with reference LCF/TR/PL25/73020014.
The project is ongoing at Associação BIOPOLIS, in partnership with the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto — Nuno Portas Study Centre (FAUP-CENP), and aims to study and enhance traditional hydraulic heritage and its relationship with the conservation of riverine biodiversity in the Guadiana Valley.

Skills/Qualifications
Individuals of legal age who demonstrably meet the following requirements may apply for this fellowship:
- Hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the areas of Archaeology, History, Heritage, History of Art, Heritage Studies, Anthropology, Geography, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or areas considered relevant to the objectives of the project, or be enrolled in an integrated master’s degree in an area considered relevant to the objectives of the project;
- Be enrolled, at the date of hiring, in a master’s course, integrated master’s course or non-degree awarding course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units;
- Submit documentary proof of the enrolment referred to in the previous paragraph by the time of hiring, under the terms applicable to the FCT Research Fellowship Regulations.
In the case of academic degrees obtained from foreign higher education institutions, candidates must submit proof of recognition of the academic degree under the terms of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, this document being required by the time of hiring.
The candidate must submit a curriculum vitae compatible with the work plan and demonstrate motivation to join an interdisciplinary team dedicated to the study and enhancement of traditional hydraulic heritage and riverine landscapes.
Specific Requirements
Preference conditions:
- Motivation to develop a master’s dissertation in the candidate’s scientific area, integrated into an interdisciplinary team, with a topic focused on the study of traditional hydraulic heritage, riverine cultural landscapes and human activities associated with rivers, particularly in the context of the Guadiana Valley.
- Interest or academic experience in Archaeology, History, Heritage, History of Art, Anthropology, Historical Geography, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or related areas;
- Interest in the study of molinological heritage, watermills, weirs, water channels, traditional water management systems, rural heritage, archaeology of architecture, cultural landscapes or human activities associated with the river, such as fishing, navigation, thermalism, mining, irrigated agriculture or other traditional uses of water;
- Basic skills in bibliographic, documentary and archival research, including the collection, organisation and systematisation of historical, cartographic, iconographic or oral information;
- Availability to support fieldwork, namely visits to study sites, photographic recording, support for heritage inventorying, collection of information in the field and support for architectural or landscape surveys;
- Knowledge of digital tools to support research, namely text editing, data organisation, simple image processing, graphic presentation and cartographic consultation, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Earth, Google Maps, QGIS, Photoshop, InDesign, Canva or equivalent programmes;
- Basic knowledge of computer-aided design, such as AutoCAD, Archicad, SketchUp or equivalent programmes, although these do not constitute a mandatory requirement;
- Command of spoken and written Portuguese. Basic knowledge of English suitable for reading bibliography. Knowledge of Spanish and/or French will also be valued;
- Availability for occasional travel to archives, libraries, public institutions, study sites in the Guadiana Valley and scientific or cultural activities associated with the project;
- Organisational capacity, sense of responsibility, progressive autonomy, team spirit and interest in collaborating with researchers from different disciplinary areas
