CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 1 (ONE) RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (BI) UNDER THE “SIB_MATER” PROJECT (REF. 2024.16600. PEX), FUNDED BY FCT, I.P. — FOUNDATION FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, I.P., TO BE CONDUCTED AT THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO (FAUP) BOLS-FAUP-26-3.
A call for applications is now open for the award of 1 (one) Research Fellowship (BI) to a bachelor’s degree holder enrolled in a master’s program or a non-degree program, as part of the project “SIB_MATER – Born of Stone in the Iron Age: Maternal Lineages in Northwest Portugal” (Ref. 2024.16600.PEX), funded by FCT, I.P. – Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. through national funds, and currently underway at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, under the following conditions:
- Scientific field(s): Architecture.
- Admission requirements:Candidates who are of legal age and meet the following requirements, as documented by supporting evidence, may apply:
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture;
- Be a student enrolled in a master’s program in Architecture and/or in a non-degree-granting program that is part of the educational program of a higher education institution, carried out in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units—a requirement to be duly verified at the time of hiring;
- Not currently receiving a non-degree-granting research fellowship for a cumulative period of 2 years, whether consecutive or non-consecutive.
- Preferred qualifications:Experience in 3D modeling based on point clouds;

- 1 If the academic degree was awarded by a foreign institution of higher education, it must be recognized by a Portuguese institution of higher education, in accordance with the provisions of Article 25 of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, which approves the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and Article 4(2)(e) of Decree-Law No. 60/2018, of August 3; any formalities established therein must be completed by the date of the hiring agreement.
- 2 Proof of enrollment must be submitted by the date of the hiring decision, and applicants may attach a sworn statement attesting that they meet the enrollment requirements for the purposes of their application.
- Have experience in digital geometric design of organic and natural forms, as well as their visualization using realistic textures, as demonstrated through a portfolio;
- Have experience in creating models for digital manufacturing and for extended realities—virtual and augmented;
- Be able to adapt to new digital productivity scenarios, including image processing, data processing, and online publishing.
- Work Plan:4.1. As part of the CENP’s Architecture: Theory, Design, History (ATPH) research group, the main tasks to be performed under this fellowship will be:
- Monitoring and supporting the overall development of the research project “SIB_MATER – Born of Stone in the Iron Age: Maternários in Northwest Portugal”;
- Creating three-dimensional models based on point clouds;
- Preparing models for digital fabrication and visualization using extended reality (XR) techniques;
- Preparing and publishing online content related to the project’s themes.
- 4.2. When an academic degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the fellowship contracts, the fellowship may continue provided that the activities set forth in the work plan have not been completed and in accordance with the terms specifically set forth in the call for applications and in the contract, pursuant to Article 10(6) of the Regulations.
- Applicable legislation and regulations:The call for applications and the subsequent award of the fellowship are governed by the provisions set forth in the University of Porto Research Fellowship Regulations—approved by Regulation No. 582/2026, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, No. 96, of May 19; Legal Framework for the Recognition of Academic Degrees and Higher Education Diplomas Awarded by Foreign Higher Education Institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law No. 4/2015, dated January 7; and Statute of the Research Fellow (EBI), approved by Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, as currently amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28; Regulation on Research Grants No. 950/2019, dated December 16, 2019, of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), I.P., in its current version, and other applicable regulations.
- Work Location:The research project will be carried out at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto and/or other locations necessary for its execution, under the academic supervision of Dr. Carla Alexandra Garrido de Oliveira, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto.
- Duration of the fellowship:The fellowship will last for 6 (six) months on a full-time basis and may be renewable for equal or different periods, depending on institutional needs and financial availability; the projected end date of the project is August 15, 2027.
- Amount of the monthly living allowance:8.1. The amount of the monthly living allowance for the fellowship is €1,090.98, as set forth in Annex I of the Regulations.
- 8.2. Payment will be made by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto via bank transfer. In addition to this stipend, the scholarship recipient will be covered by personal accident insurance.
- 8.3. The scholarship recipient may enroll in Voluntary Social Security (valid for scholarship contracts of six months or longer); this is optional (not mandatory), and the reimbursement corresponds to the first bracket of the contribution base.
- Selection methods:9.1. The selection methods are as follows: curriculum evaluation (CE), weighted at 60%, and, optionally, supplemented by an interview (INT), weighted at 40%, which will only take place when the Selection Committee determines that the CE does not sufficiently clarify the candidates’ actual competencies or distinguish which candidate is best suited for the position and the duties to be performed. If an interview is conducted, it will be held with the 3 (three) candidates with the highest scores in the CV evaluation.
- 9.2. Each member of the Selection Committee evaluates the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 100 points.
- 9.3. The criteria and weighting factors for the curriculum evaluation (AC) are as follows:
- Final undergraduate degree grade (0 to 20 points);
- Skills in digital modeling, digital fabrication, and visualization, demonstrated through the presentation of projects or supporting documentation (0 to 40 points);
- Letter of motivation, highlighting the applicant’s alignment with the preference criteria mentioned in section 3, interest in carrying out the work program described in section 4, interest in the field and familiarity with digital design and fabrication processes, as well as immediate availability (0 to 40 points).
- 9.4. The following are the criteria and weighting factors for the interview (ENT), should one be conducted:
- Breadth and depth of knowledge on the research topic (0 to 20 points);
- Communication skills (0 to 20 points);
- Proficiency in the required technologies (0 to 30 points);
- Motivation and availability (0 to 30 points).
- 9.5. Applicants may request authorization from the chair of the Selection Committee to have their interview conducted via videoconference, providing justification for such a request.
- 9.6. Failure to respond to the email invitation to the interview within two business days or failure to attend the interview phase of the selection process shall be considered a withdrawal from the competition, and candidates will be excluded from the competition.
- 9.7. The Final Score (FS) will be calculated using the following formula: FS = (0.6 × AC) + (0.4 × ENT).
- 9.8. Candidates who receive a Final Score of 70 points or less will be excluded from the competition.
- 9.9. This competitive selection process is intended exclusively to fill the specified vacancy; in the event that no candidate demonstrates the profile required to carry out the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Selection Committee reserves the right not to fill the position through this competitive selection process.

- Alternate Member: Dr. Pedro Augusto de Azambuja Varela, Researcher at the Nuno Portas Study Center;
- Alternate Member: Dr. José Pedro Ovelheiro Marques de Sousa, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Porto.
- Submission Format and Deadline:11.1. Applications must be submitted by 20 august 2026 (11:59pm – Lisbon).

- 11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving compliance with the conditions set forth in this Notice, namely:
- Curriculum vitae;
- Letter of motivation, indicating availability;
- Copy of the certificate(s) for the required qualifications and recognition of the degree if it was obtained from a foreign higher education institution (this recognition may be submitted by the time of hiring);
- Proof of enrollment in a program of study or course that does not lead to an academic degree, or a sworn statement attesting that the applicant meets the enrollment requirements and will submit proof of enrollment by the time of hiring;
- A piece of work selected by the applicant as representative of their proficiency in the required parametric design technologies;
- Statement of eligibility (attached).
- 11.4. Applicants may also submit any other documents they deem relevant to the evaluation of their qualifications.
- 11.7. The documents mentioned in section 11.3 should preferably be submitted in a non-editable format.
- 11.9. The Selection Committee may, whenever it deems necessary, request that applicants submit supplementary documentation regarding the information provided in their résumés, setting a deadline for such submission, under the following terms:
- the requested documentation is not intended for the submission of information not included in the résumé, nor for the submission of missing documents required by this Notice;
- all applicants are notified that supplementary documentation has been requested.
- False statements:False statements made by applicants will be punished in accordance with the law.
- Method of Publication/Notification of Results:13.1. Applicants will be notified of the minutes pertaining to the application evaluation phase(s) via email, sent to the address they provide for this purpose, with a delivery confirmation.
- 13.2. Notifications are sent by email, in accordance with Articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the CPA.
- 13.3. Pursuant to the provisions of Article 121 et seq. of the CPA, after being notified, applicants have 10 business days to submit their written response.
- Reserve List:A reserve list will be compiled based on the final ranking list, which may be used in the event that the candidate ranked first withdraws. The faculty’s highest authority reserves the right to call upon the next candidate on the list, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 (twelve) months from the date of publication of this Notice.
