Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health at UNSW

UNSW Medicine & Health is a national leader in learning, teaching and research, with close affiliations to several of Australia’s finest hospitals, research institutes and health care organisations.

The Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health within the School of Clinical Medicine leads the delivery of educational and research activities aimed at the maintenance of child and adolescent health from the neonatal period until 18 years of age.

Details of the role

The Research Genetic Counsellor supports delivery of the Diagnosis4All (D4All) program through provision of culturally safe genetic counselling, participant coordination and clinical research support activities.

D4All is a statewide, interdisciplinary program focused on improving equitable, timely and culturally safe access to genomic diagnoses for priority populations in NSW, including First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and people living in regional and remote areas.

Working under the direction of the Program Manager and Chief Investigators, the Research Genetic Counsellor contributes specialist genetic counselling expertise while supporting research delivery, participant engagement and coordination of clinical–research interfaces. The role has a strong participant-facing focus and works closely with families, clinicians, researchers and community partners.

The role reports to the Associate Professor Elizabeth Palmer. They will work closely with other members of the Rare Diseases NSW Group at UNSW as well as with staff of the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network and South West Sydney Local Health District. This will include travel to different sites as needed. The Research Genetic Counsellor will also participate in ongoing training and personal and group supervision in genetic counselling.

Some key skills required:

  • Relevant undergraduate degree with post-graduate qualification in genetic counselling.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in the provision of genetic counselling services.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the application of genomic medicine in the setting of clinical care and research.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and the ability to use health information systems.
  • Commitment to ongoing education including actively seeking opportunities to develop and nurture leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to provide supervision and mentorship to junior research genetic counsellors, as well as research staff and students/trainees requiring genetics education.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines using judgement and initiative.
