Offer Description
At the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa), a call is open for the attribution of 3 (three) research grants for Master's Students financed by the Lisbon Regional Operational Programme (LISBOA 2030), under the PORTUGAL 2030 framework, through FEDER funds, as part of the “PORTULAN CLARIN – Infraestrutura de Investigação para a Ciência e Tecnologia da Linguagem” project (LISBOA2030-FEDER-01316900), according to the following conditions:
Work plan
- With the highest level of autonomy and capacity permitted under this research grant, to conduct cutting-edge research into Artificial Intelligence applied to Language Technology for conversational agents with a view to multimodal information processing, including the development of neural models for language and images using deep learning technology, with a particular focus on the Portuguese language;
- Preparation for and participation in project meetings and subsequent activities;
- Contributing to the drafting of articles and the publication of results;
- Taking part in the project’s dissemination activities.
Fellowship duration
The grant is expected to start on October/November 2026. The contract, with a duration of 9 (nine) months, on an exclusive basis, eventually with the possibility of renewal, for a maximum total duration of 18 months, including the initial period of contract. Under no circumstances may the grant extend beyond the project's end date of 13 April 2028, subject to budget availability.
Form of presentation of applications

Applications must be accompanied, compulsorily and under penalty of exclusion, by the following documents. No document, which must be submitted at the time of application, may be submitted after the deadline for submission:
- Personal data form and declaration of consent for communication of results via e-mail;
- Declaration under oath;
- Proof of enrolment, in the academic year 2027/2028, in the MSc in Informatics Engineering of Ciências ULisboa or, alternatively, a sworn statement confirming that you meet the requirements to enrol in the programme (see form below);
- Detailed and updated Curriculum Vitae;
- Cover Letter;
- A photocopy of the certificate attesting to proficiency in the European variant of the Portuguese language (spoken and written) at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, if applicable;
- Photocopy of the qualification certificate of the academic degree required - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering;
- If the academic degree, required in the present announcement as an admission requirement for the type of scholarship in question, was obtained abroad, you must submit one of the following documents: (See also the NOTES below)
- Document proving the granting, by a Portuguese Institution, of the recognition, equivalence or registration of the academic degree;
- Document proving that you have already applied for the recognition of the degree, which application must be submitted by the deadline for receipt of applications, inclusive.
Notes
- The presentation of the proof of obtaining the recognition or equivalence or registration of the academic degree is a mandatory condition for signing the contract;
- For academic degrees obtained in foreign countries, which have not yet obtained either recognition or equivalence or registration of the degree, it is necessary to recognise it, under the terms provided for in Decree Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August, combined with Ordinance no. 33/2019, of 25 January, as currently amended.

Candidates must fulfil the following mandatory requirements:
- a) Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering – this information must be included in the CV;
- b) Enrolment, for the 2026/2027 academic year, on the Master’s degree programme in Computer Engineering at ULisboa or, alternatively, a sworn statement confirming that you meet the requirements to enrol in the programme in September of 2026 – this information must be included in the CV;
- c) Proficiency in the European variant of the Portuguese language (spoken and written) at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, certified by the relevant qualification, or as a mother tongue, as this is a project aimed at developing conversational agents in the European variant of Portuguese, and it is essential that the candidate is able to assess their performance – this information must be included in the CV;
- d) Presentation of Cover Letter.
If the academic degree required by the present announcement as an admission requirement for the type of grant in question was obtained abroad, the requirements mentioned in point “Form of presentation of applications” of this announcement regarding the qualification certificates shall be taken into consideration.
Specific Requirements
Preference will be given to candidates with the following requirements, either cumulatively or alternatively:
- a) Experience and/or aptitude for the design and development of large language models based on deep learning and capable of multimodal processing – this information must be included in the CV and cover letter;
- b) Previous experience and/or aptitude in Research and Development (R&D) projects in the field of Natural Language Processing, Generative AI and chatbots – This information must be included in your CV and cover letter

Benefits
Monthly allowance and social security:
- The fellowship amount corresponds to € 1090,98 (one thousand and ninety euros and ninety-eight cents), according to FCT Regulation for Research Fellowships, published by Regulation no. 950/2019 in the Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 241, of 16th of December, as currently amended, and available in the site of FCT, I.P.. It will be paid monthly by bank transfer;
- The candidate to be hired may exercise his right to social insurance by joining the voluntary social insurance scheme, under the terms of the Statute of the Research Fellowship. The financing entities assume the costs resulting from the contributions provided for this Social Insurance, according to the Statute of the Research Fellowship.
Selection process
Selection criteria:
- 1. Failure to meet the Admission Requirements constitutes sufficient grounds for the non-admission of candidates on the basis of absolute merit.
- 2. The final ranking of candidates is expressed on a scale of 0 to 20 points, i.e. 100 per cent.
- 3. The criteria for assessment on relative merit are as follows:
- a) Degree to which the preferential criteria are met: 40%;
- b) Alignment of the motivation letter with the work plan: 25%;
- c) Proficiency in the working language: 35%;
- d) An interview, if deemed necessary by the selection panel. Should an interview take place, the total marks obtained for assessment criteria a) to c) will account for 50 per cent of the final mark, and the interview for the remaining 50 per cent.
- 4. The selection panel reserves the right not to award one or more scholarships should the candidates’ profiles not be satisfactory, even if their marks are above at least 50 per cent.
