Job Summary

The Snyder-Warwick Laboratory at the University of Michigan is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented research technician to support studies focused on the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) using murine models. The lab investigates NMJ development, recovery after nerve injury, aging, and disease pathophysiology through a combination of histological, imaging, and functional techniques. The technician will play a key role in animal husbandry, laboratory maintenance, and experimental procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Manage mouse colonies, including breeding transgenic lines, weaning pups, and collecting tissue samples for genotyping.
  • Organizes and maintains required documentation on lab and/or specimen conditions.
  • Performs all related work in accordance with established protocols and safety/compliance requirements.
  • Perform basic tissue processing techniques including fixation, sectioning, and immunofluorescent staining.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment meets regulatory standards for maintenance and testing.
  • Assist with animal protocol submissions and renewals.
  • Support histomorphometric and functional assessments of NMJ structures.
  • Assist in data analysis and report preparation.
  • Adhere to all University of Michigan laboratory policies and safety guidelines.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in biology, neuroscience, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques such as genotyping.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and follow-through on tasks.
  • Works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to chemical hazard. Must be physically able to wear protective equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience and knowledge of mouse husbandry and breeding.
  • Proficiency in tissue sectioning and immunofluorescent staining.
  • Experience with microscopy techniques (e.g., confocal, fluorescent).
  • Familiarity with UM laboratory policies and regulatory compliance procedures.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM-4:00 PM or 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM. This position is not eligible for remote or hybrid work.

Appointment Type

This is a 12-month term-limited position with the possibility of renewal based upon availability of work, funding, and performance. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not constitute a contract or guarantee of continued employment. Your position remains subject to the University's policies and standards regarding employee performance and conduct, including the possibility of disciplinary action or termination, in accordance with applicable guidelines.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
