The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Research Scientist to lead its Precision Education and Assessment Core. This role involves leading the study design and analysis team supporting faculty research in medical education specifically focused on assessment and selection. Precision education is a rapidly-developing field, and Stanford is leading research in many facets of the field. The department benefits from collaboration with other disciplines and Schools at Stanford including the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Education, within local Silicon Valley, and across the globe.

Stanford is leading research efforts to transform health care for all through Precision Emergency Medicine and Precision Education. Precision Education is a systematic approach that integrates longitudinal data and analytics to drive precise educational interventions that address each individual learner's needs and goals in a continuous, timely, and cyclical fashion, ultimately improving meaningful educational, clinical, or system outcomes.

RESEARCH AREAS INCLUDE: Education; Assessment; Organizational Psychology; Data Science; AI/Machine Learning

CORE DUTIES: The candidate, depending upon rank and experience, may support department faculty, trainees, and students with varying levels of experience with research to design and plan studies, data collection and data management towards analysis and publication of results. This work can involve the use of administrative data sets, primarily collected data, national/global data registries, or electronic health record data. The candidate will work with faculty, data analysis staff, and trainees in a collaborative team science fashion offering mentorship through participation. They may supervise the work of departmental research data analysts available to support data management, the conduct of study analyses, and co-preparation of manuscripts for results publication in the literature while collaborating with the departments professional medical editing team to advance faculty and trainee growth in scientific writing. They will also participate in departmental works-in-progress sessions providing direct and indirect feedback on a range of projects. The candidate will also lead research projects under the mentorship of and in collaboration with the senior faculty scientists of the Precision Education and Assessment Research Lab, working specifically with the faculty lead on assessment and selection on research design, data collection, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and production and delivery of presentations and publications inclusive of authorship.

QUALIFICATIONS / MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ph.D. in Education, Measurement, Data Science or alternative appropriate discipline.
  • Post-doctoral experience in Education, Measurement, Data Science or related field is desired.
  • Ability to support the education and growth of physician faculty and medical trainees as collaborative peers in study design, conduct of research data analyses, and associated academic presentation and publication of research methods.
  • Experience in both conducting data analysis and supervising the work of data analysts when available to support the conduct of study analyses.
  • Proficiency in statistical languages such as Python, R, SAS, SPSS, STATA.
  • Proficiency in qualitative methodology such as grounded theory, phenomenology, ethnography, case studies.
  • Excellent written and oral skills with experience writing medical education research papers.
  • Ability to work independently and part of the department's and medical school's medical education research teams.
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups.
  • Ability to meet all deadlines with timely, high-quality deliverables.

The expected pay range for this position is $120,000-$150,000 per annum. Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years since their applicable education, field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; among other factors.
