Research Specialist
Overview:
Carries out research assignments for a multi-faceted research project. Performs independent research, convenes collaborators, and authors research outputs. Responsible for the daily operation of a research stream within the Success Lab focused on environmental governance and land and resource tenure.
Job Description:
Designs, plans, implements and evaluates research and synthesis on developments in environmental governance and land and resource tenure reflecting changes in the field. Collaborate with PI to define case-study synthesis research methodology on global environmental practice on themes of property rights and resource governance. Conducts analysis of 2-3 cases in alignment with Success Lab research methodology and authors practitioner-focused research outputs.
Convenes 2-3 targeted transdisciplinary roundtables to reflect, synthesize learnings, and share recommendations on organizations driving positive, ground-level environmental and social change, capturing and communicating impact, and accessing funding. Prepares decision-making and policy briefs, converting insights into actionable recommendations for donors, CSOs, government, and investors, published in relevant practitioner and donor-oriented platforms. Outlines scope of scientific paper for research publication or professional journals.
Develops 2-3 teaching materials on land and resource tenure and international development paradigms. Records 1-3 lectures in Yale recording studio in contribution to curriculum for Yale Master of Environmental Management candidate students and Yale Environmental Leadership and Training Initiative Online Certificate Program. Formulates recommendations for Success Lab fundraising pathways, geographic scope, and potential partners. May perform other duties as identified and assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and four years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Strong interpersonal skills, including effective communication in English.
- Familiarity with pre-existing evidence base in global environmental practice related to land tenure and property rights.
- Demonstrated ability to author action-oriented publications including policy briefs and op-eds.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
- Experience with convening transdisciplinary groups and leading co-creation sessions with actionable outputs.
- Demonstrated understanding of organizational impact measurement standards and practices including novel ways to measure impact.
- Familiarity with scientific literature and scientific community in fields of property rights and environmental governance.
- Advanced experience in qualitative research methodologies and tools (Dedoose).
Principal Responsibilities
- Coordinates and manages diverse survey and experimental research projects, including research design, questionnaire development, implementation, and analysis, working with a multi-institutional team of investigators.
- Authors public reports and peer-reviewed publications.
- Constructs and maintains large datasets, including codebooks.
- Maintains an online library of research reports and articles.
- Assists with grant proposals.
- Disseminates research findings through briefings, presentations, and social media.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s degree in a relevant social science field or discipline, such as survey research, risk perception, communication (climate change, science, environment, public health, and/or political communication), behavior change, psychology, political science, sociology, or human geography and four years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficiency and experience in survey and experimental research, project and data management, and analysis.
