The University of Arizona's department of Southwest Institute for Research on Women within the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences invites you to apply to the role of Research Specialist (Research Technician III).

The University of Arizona Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW; https://sirow.arizona.edu) is looking for two enthusiastic individuals to join their team and play an important role as Research Specialists. The Research Specialist will contribute to the evaluations of programs implemented by SIROW and its community partners. SIROW is a resource and research institute that designs, implements, and evaluates community-collaborative projects to improve community well-being.

One Research Specialist will join the Nuevo Camino (New Path) project team who is enhancing and expanding substance abuse treatment, early intervention, and recovery support services for adolescents and transitional aged youth (ages 12-21) who have substance use disorders and/or co-occurring substance use and mental disorders and their families/primary caregivers. This Research Specialist III will also join the Health, Hope, Home (H3) project team who is helping individuals experiencing homeless get into permanent supportive housing, while increasing their wellness, to include their ability to manage their addictions, mental health symptoms, and acute and chronic physical conditions.

One Research Specialist will join the Spectrum+ and Family Pride Initiative project teams who provide infectious disease prevention and education services and substance use and co-occurring disorder screening, referral to treatment, and outreach and pretreatment services to youth and young adults in the Tucson and Phoenix areas.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Working independently, schedule and conduct in-person interviews to collect survey data from study participants located at various locations throughout the community. Maintain an 80% intake and follow-up interview rate with minimal supervision. Scheduling of interviews includes regularly keeping in touch with research participants throughout the duration of their participation in the research study. It also includes independent regular coordination and communication with community partners to keep track of program enrollment and connect with program participants over time.
  • Outreach to individuals in the community identified as potentially eligible for the study and screen them for study eligibility. This includes developing and implementing innovative strategies for outreach with minimal supervision.
  • Enter collected data into study databases and maintain a tracking database to record study activities and to facilitate data collection activities over time. This might include developing new databases and procedures to facilitate data collection and program evaluation.
  • Participate in project meetings with research team and collaborating agencies-taking notes to keep a record of progress and challenges to inform research activities. Contribute ideas for improving programmatic protocols and procedures in collaboration with community partners.
  • Assist with writing research reports and developing power point presentations. Participate in dissemination of findings at state and national conferences. Suggest ideas for data analysis and reporting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Fluent Spanish-speaker.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with issues affecting system-involved youth and adults including substance abuse, sexual health, mental health, domestic abuse, poverty and education.
  • Knowledge of behavioral healthcare.
  • Skilled in using Microsoft word and excel.
  • Basic knowledge of data entry in online databases.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work as a team member.
  • Skilled in basic data analysis using SPSS and reporting of research findings to behavioral health practitioners.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

  • BS or BA degree in a field appropriate to the area of the position.
