Research Staff Assistant
Position Summary
The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a Research Staff Assistant to work in a laboratory studying the dynamic realm of mRNA processing and gene expression. The Research Staff Assistant supports ongoing experiments in molecular biology/biochemistry, studying mechanisms of gene expression and how errors in synthesis in mRNA lead to human diseases. This role is contingent on continuous funding.
Responsibilities
- Cultures human cell types and performing tissue culture assays.
- Performs DNA, RNA, and protein isolation and, via sequencing, PCR or Western blot as appropriate.
- Treats cells with various compounds and assists researchers in analyzing cells for changes in growth and gene expression.
- Manages ordering of reagents, chemicals, and maintaining stock of laboratory necessities.
- Ensures the laboratory is up to safety standards and abides by Columbia’s Environmental Health and Safety guidelines.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required in Biology or a related field. Minimum (1) year of experience in a research environment.
Preferred Qualifications
1+ yrs of lab experience, including cell culture and protein/RNA analysis beyond college preferred.
