Essential functions (job duties):
The Research Study Assistant recruits potential research study participants and provides education relating to the research study. Follows protocols, collects, processes and analyzes research data, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Recruits potential research study participants. Provides research study information and explains research protocols. Obtains informed consents from potential research study participants.
Collects data from potential research study participants by conducting interviews, providing questionnaires and tests and/or reviewing and extracting data from health and medical records. Ensures completeness and accuracy of data collected. Compiles, tabulates and/or codes participant data and enters into database. Updates database as necessary.
Follows-up with research study participants by conducting phone calls and/ or face-to-face visits. Provides additional research information, resolves any data inaccuracies and collects samples as appropriate to study.
Assists with collecting, tracking, reviewing, analyzing and summarizing research data. Creates reports, tables, charts, graphs and/or presentations. Communicates research information to appropriate parties. May assist with writing/preparing portions of grant applications and providing input to scientific papers and publications.
Completes all documents associated with current local, state, & federal regulatory guidelines, requirements, laws and research protocols.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Paid Research Study Assistant Position - Qualitative Research on Family Communication and Cancer My name is Dr. Cinzia Caparso. I am an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing, and I am seeking a highly motivated and organized Research Study Assistant to support a year-long research project focused on developing a personalized communication tool for families affected by early-onset cancer. As a Research Study Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the study's objectives, including:
- Interactions with the Protocol Review Monitoring Committee (PRMC) at Karmanos Cancer Institute and WSU Institutional Review Board (IRB)
- Recruiting and enrolling participants
- Managing and cleaning data
- Collecting and analyzing qualitative data
- Disseminating study results
Qualifications:
Education: High school completion (or GED)
Bachelor’s degree in a science related field preferred.
Experience: Entry level (no prior job-related work experience)
Research related experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to empathetically, effectively and professionally communicate verbally and in writing to a diverse population. Ability to speak, read and write fluent English. Ability to clearly and effectively present information one-on-one and in groups. Working knowledge of database software. Ability to accurately compile and analyze complex data sets and create and update spreadsheets, graphs and presentations based on data.
Preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a science related field preferred.
- Completion of Advanced Qualitative Methods or completed a qualitative research study and CITI Training courses (Required)
- Strong interest in qualitative research methods
- Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills

Project Description: This research project addresses the rising incidence of early-onset cancer and its impact on families with children under 18. Using an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design and Intervention Mapping, the study aims to develop a personalized, responsive website communication tool—a Question Prompt List (QPL)—to facilitate open discussions about cancer-related concerns within families. The project involves interviews with patients, coparents, and children (ages 12-17) to inform the design of a digital, family-centered QPL.
