Research Technician I, Department of Urology

Position Highlights

The Department of Urology is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and organized research technician to support projects investigating kidney cancer pathobiology in the Kundu lab. The successful candidate will generate DNA constructs for mutagenesis and CRISPR-KI/KO and develop assays to study the tumorigenicity of kidney cancer cell lines in vitro and in vivo. This position offers the opportunity to work as part of a collaborative and interdisciplinary research team. Training will be provided with the expectation that the technician will perform experiments independently once trained.

Duties & Responsibilities

Under supervision and with detailed instruction:

  • Cloning DNA constructs for mutagenesis, CRISPR KI/KO, and protein expression.
  • Tissue culture.
  • PCR, qPCR, western blot, etc. *High throughput assay for cytotoxicity, redox assessment, etc.
  • Ready to learn new laboratory techniques adhered to the PI's research interest.

Conduct research experiments following detailed protocols.

Maintain detailed and organized research data (experimental procedure and results) in laboratory notebook and in shared folder, write summary reports, and report findings to the investigator.

Formally present experimental data to the PI periodically:

  • Assist in training students working in the laboratory.
  • Organize supplies, materials, or equipment and set-up equipment and materials for laboratory experiments.
  • Follow established procedures to prepare solutions and reagents; perform library research to find appropriate procedures, as required.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as labeling and inventories.
  • Clean glassware and other laboratory equipment.
  • Make minor repairs and/or make arrangements for major repairs to be performed on laboratory and experimental equipment such as microtomes, microscopes, centrifuges, analytical balances, Magpix multiplex immunoassay instrument, Direct Detect protein quantification instrument, sonicators, mouse behavior apparatuses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good experience in tissue culture including cell counting using hemocytometer, cell seeding, drug treatment in multiplex plates, etc.
  • Good experience in cloning, mutagenesis, and ability to use cloning softwares, e.g., Snapgene.
  • Good experience with DNA/RNA isolation, qPCR, and western blot.
  • Experience to use statistical softwares e.g., GraphPad Prism.
  • Excellent experience with record keeping and data management.
  • Attention to detail: Excellent attention to detail required.
  • Time management skills: The ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, as well as meet project deadlines.
  • Communication skills: Ability to effectively communicate with collaborators and other team members, as well as present results at lab meetings and conferences.
  • Adaptability: Must be able to work independently or as part of a team, as well as handle unexpected challenges that may arise during experiments.
  • Safety awareness: Should have a strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols and procedures, including handling of hazardous materials and biological specimens.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, genetics, or related field. High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.

Salary and Benefits

Rate of Pay: $16.50 - $18.75

Compensation Type: hourly rate

Full Time/Part Time: Full Time

Number of Hours Worked per Week: 40
