Position Highlights

The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine is seeking a Research Technician II to assist with experiments including rat cardiomyocyte isolation and culture, adenoviral production, high resolution confocal imaging, and standard biochemical and molecular biology assays. The Research Technician II will help in developing, planning, designing, and conducting research; contributing to the review of progress and evaluates results; coordinates laboratory and field work including lab equipment management, and participating in formulating research methods, techniques, and equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, conduct research experiments following detailed protocols.
  • Perform basic set up of experiments in cardiovascular research techniques including mouse and rat cardiomyocyte isolation and culture, telemetry implantation in rodents, and molecular biology techniques including the production of adenoviruses.
  • Use general knowledge of methods and protocols of molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology to support data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Assist team with the development of research experiments with a focus on biochemical and molecular biology, including helping with the experimental design, identification of the appropriate methods, and troubleshooting best practices.
  • Aid in lab maintenance and cleaning of lab equipment from experiments.
  • Maintain records, logs, notes, and spreadsheets to facilitate data analysis.
  • Provide routine and technical administrative support to research projects including ordering, stocking, and cleaning basic laboratory supplies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Employee must be able to keep protocols, data, and samples organized with clear documentation recording how experiments were performed to ensure rigor and reproducibility. Employee must be able to solve problems that may require some analysis and interpretation. They are expected to independently propose solutions to problems for manager review, requiring innovation and creativity. Be able to review the effectiveness of programs, projects, or systems within own group / function, and making necessary adjustments. Employee should be able to effectively communicate with professionalism with immediate peers within assigned work group and facilitate interaction and information exchange with other work groups as required to perform role. Based on nature of the role, employee may field requests from others in the organization. Employee should be able to work under minimal guidance and assigned in the form of desired expectations. Should use independent judgment to determine best approach and creativity is expected to achieve maximum results and handle new situations. Decisions have some impact on operations and outcomes within own job function (generalists) or specific work area (specialists).

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required. Three (3) years of relevant experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree is Life Sciences Preferred. Prior experience with the role and regulation of the cardiac ryanodine receptor in acquired and inherited cardiac diseases.
