Sr. Research Specialist II

The Biology Department is seeking a full-time Sr. Research Specialist II who will investigate the genetic processes governing hearing regeneration. The primary duties and responsibilities of the employee will include using the zebrafish and mouse as model organisms, lab management, and conducting scientific research in Dr. Erin Jimenez’s laboratory. The Sr. Research Specialist II makes intellectual contribution in specialized scientific lab or core facility. Examples of core facilities utilizing sophisticated instrumentation would be flow cytometry, high throughput genetics, x-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, peptide synthesizer, and high-performance liquid chromatography. Capable of troubleshooting, applying specialized scientific knowledge and experience to make decisions, and training/guiding other laboratory personnel.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, design and manage specialized projects and/or instrumentation, coordinates own objectives.
  • Utilize specialized knowledge to set up and run sophisticated instrumentation and interpret results.
  • Act as consultant to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives. Collaborates in development of new protocols and uses of equipment. Advises investigators on experimental design and advises on research methods.
  • Co-author/author publications. Contribute original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to write reports, abstracts and manuscripts. Or individual could have significant input in research design and data collection and interpretation based on advanced knowledge/ understanding of activity.
  • Independently perform all research assays specific to the research laboratory interests.
  • Collaborates with other technologists, managers, and faculty both inside, and possibly outside of JHU.
  • Independently develop protocol and criteria.
  • Make decisions regarding research projects that may require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction; consider resources and lab priorities when making decisions.

Additional Duties

  • Training of post-doctoral associates, graduate students, undergraduate students, visiting scientists, and interns.
  • Re-training and/or maintenance of training for all lab personnel.
  • Preparing and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintaining an inventory of plasmids, antibodies, zebrafish, and mouse lines.
  • Generating CRISPR mutant zebrafish and transgenics, genotyping, and maintaining zebrafish lines, and generating mouse transgenics, genotyping, and maintaining mouse lines.
  • Performing in situ hybridization, immunostaining, and confocal microscopy.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field. Five years of experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques. Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree with related graduate research. Mastery with Molecular Biology Techniques (recombinant DNA cloning) is desired.

Classified Title: Sr. Research Specialist II. Role/Level/Range: ACRP/04/ME. Starting Salary Range: $64,600 - $113,300 Annually (Commensurate w/exp.). Employee group: Full Time. Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. FLSA Status: Exempt. Location: Homewood Campus. Department name: Biology. Personnel area: School of Arts & Sciences.
