Position Highlights

The Department of Surgery is seeking a motivated Research Technician II to support research projects focused on state-of-the-art multimodal imaging and complementary game changing technologies for quantifying and targeting lymphatic structure and function in the laboratory of Dr. Marlys Witte. This position is ideal for candidates looking to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic, translational research environment. The technician will assist with laboratory experiments, data collection, and general lab maintenance, contributing to studies aimed at advancing our understanding of Gf lymphatic imaging.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collects and compiles research data using state-of-the-art biomedical instrumentation, assisting with analysis of multidimensional datasets using advanced signal/image processing techniques.
  • Contribute to high quality publications and mentor team of graduate/undergraduate students
  • Under the direction of the PI, perform routine laboratory experiments involving multimodal imaging of the lymphatic system.
  • Assist in animal studies under supervision (murine models), including husbandry, monitoring, and procedures under IACUC-approved protocols.
  • Aid in the collection and processing of tissue, blood, and other biological samples per established protocols for histology, under supervision.
  • Under PI direction, prepare reagents, media, and other supplies necessary for experiments.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper operation, calibration, and cleanliness.
  • Under direction, support data acquisition, entry, and preliminary analysis as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of experiments, procedures, and results in laboratory notebooks and databases, with guidance from PI.
  • Work closely with postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and principal investigators to support ongoing projects.
  • Attend lab meetings, journal clubs, and departmental seminars as needed.
  • Assist with ordering and inventory management of laboratory supplies as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques (pipetting, centrifugation, microscopy, etc.).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and follow protocols carefully.
  • Interest and enthusiasm for lymphatic, imaging, and surgical research, as well as translational science.
  • Basic knowledge of software programs, such as Matlab/Python and Office 365.
  • Basic knowledge of data analysis, signal processing, statistics, bio-instrumentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required, and;
  • 3 years relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related field.
  • Previous research or lab experience (through coursework, internships, or employment).
  • Experience working under laboratory safety protocols (e.g., BSL-2 procedures).
  • Experience and familiarity with rodent animal models of research and aseptic techniques.
  • Experience in clinical and/or translational science.
