The Residence Education Coordinator (REC) at UC Merced plays a pivotal role in creating a vibrant and supportive living-learning community within the residence halls. This position oversees the day-to-day operations of assigned residential communities, fostering an inclusive environment conducive to academic success, personal growth, and community engagement. The Residence Education Coordinator is responsible for implementing and evaluating residence education initiatives, providing guidance and support to residential staff, serving as a campus referral source and conduct officer, and addressing the diverse needs of students ranging from first-year undergraduates to graduate students. The REC position involves frequent interaction with students, staff, and campus partners in various settings, including office meetings, residence hall environments, and campus events. The Residence Education Coordinator participates in an on-call rotation during weekdays, weekends, holidays, break and is required to respond to crisis situations outside of regular business hours. This is a live-on position that includes a furnished two-bedroom on-campus staff apartment and a residential dining meal plan during academic terms.
This position requires responsibility for supervising, directing, and evaluating the work of subordinate employees and exercising independent judgment in the administration of department policies and procedures.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
RESIDENCE HALL MANAGEMENT
- Manage administrative tasks related to residence hall operations, including building management, facility operations, and occupancy management.
- Implement check in/check out procedures, room change process, and room consolidation process in collaboration with Housing Services team.
- Collaborate and communicate with maintenance and custodial teams regarding work order requests and resident safety.
- As needed, perform temporary lock changes as delegated by Lock and Access.
- Collaborate with campus partners such as facilities management, dining services, and campus safety to ensure the smooth functioning of residence halls.
SUPERVISION AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate Resident Assistants (RAs) and other residential student staff members in an assigned community or set of communities, depending on department need.
- Facilitate regular staff development activities and in-service training programs to promote professional and leadership development.
- Foster a positive and supportive work environment that promotes staff development, teamwork, and collaboration.
- Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance staff competencies in areas such as conflict resolution, crisis response, and community building.
- Facilitate individual supervisory meetings and weekly staff meetings to cultivate open lines of communication, provide leadership.
GENERAL ADMINISTRATION
- Implement policies and procedures that align with university standards and promote a safe and inclusive residential environment.
- Develop and implement tools to evaluate and assess department programs, training, educational learning outcomes, and administrative processes.
- Analyze data, recommend improvements, and submit written reports. Assist in writing midyear and year-end and analytical reports (quantitative and qualitative).
- Attend individual meetings with supervisor and weekly staff and departmental meetings.
- Serve on campus and departmental projects and committees.
RESIDENCE EDUCATION CURRICULUM
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate Resident Assistants (RAs) and other residential student staff members.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND CRISIS RESPONSE
- Serve as a resource for students in crisis situations, providing crisis intervention, referrals to campus resources, and follow-up support.
- Serve as a conduct hearing officer as stipulated by Residence Education policies and procedures.
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation of incidents.
- Respond to inappropriate student behavior in violation of campus policies and procedures and/or negatively impacts other residents, and support hall staff in the follow-up process.
- Consult with the Director, Associate Director(s), or other professional staff members on conduct and student of concern actions as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Serve on weeknight, weekend, and holiday on-call rotation to respond to emergencies.
- Participate in crisis response and campus emergency response.
STUDENT SUPPORT AND ADVISING
- Maintain a high level of visibility and interaction with students.
- Provide individualized support and guidance to residents facing academic, personal, or interpersonal challenges.
- Collaborate with campus partners to develop and implement strategies for promoting student mental health and well-being within the residential community.
- Mediate conflicts as needed and serve as a resource and referral agent.
- Provide ongoing diversity and social justice education and work with residents regarding student behavior and skill development.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Qualifications
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Personnel or related field from an accredited institution. (Required)
- Advanced degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Personnel or related field from an accredited institution (Preferred)
- At least two years of experience as a paraprofessional or professional in a live-on housing role in higher education or relevant field (Required)
- One year of relevant professional experience in higher education or relevant field. (Required)
- 6 years equivalent experience/training/education in lieu of bachelor's degree. (Required)
CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and knowledge of higher education practices involved in wrap-around student support services, risk assessment, and incident triaging.
- Skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, problem solving, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication, and intercultural competence.
- Knowledge of higher education student development theory and practice.
