The University of Montana seeks an engaged instructor and artist to enhance and expand the School of Visual and Media Arts (SVMA) curriculum and creative community. This one-semester appointment will teach one to two classes in the area of their specialty, interact with students, and maintain a working studio on campus during Spring term 2026.
The school welcomes candidates working in any field relating to our current programs in Visual Art and New Media but especially encourages candidates with expertise in areas not currently offered. (please see website for specific information: https://www.umt.edu/visual-media-arts/ ).
Special topics classes, as well as new perspectives and processes, are examples of how this position might enhance our offerings. Community-facing projects during the residency are encouraged. Successful candidates will demonstrate how they will add to or build upon the current SVMA program. SVMA provides an on-campus studio with access to the school's wide range of facilities and equipment. The Resident Teaching Artist will maintain their professional practice on campus and periodically host students and the SVMA community in the studio. No committee or service duties are expected.
SVMA is a dynamic school offering BA, BFA and MFA degrees and serving students across the university. The school plays an important role in the Missoula community, a vibrant creative hub for the arts in Montana. Short-term university housing options are available.
Key Responsibilities:
- Offer 1-2 specialized classes during the semester
- Maintain an on-campus studio to inspire students and model professional practice.
- Host at least one lecture, art exhibit, and/or other public event to engage the larger community each semester.

- Salary: $30,000, plus $1,000 for equipment and materials

Required Qualifications
- A terminal degree in a discipline represented within the school or related field.
- A record of professional and creative activity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in teaching.
