Job Description:
The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is an official university-level research center at Texas State University. The TxSSC is tasked in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the Governor’s Homeland Security Strategic Plan with key school safety initiatives and mandates. The TxSSC serves as the clearinghouse for the dissemination of safety and security information through research, training, and technical assistance for K-12 schools and junior colleges throughout the state of Texas. As a result, Texas has become a national leader in school safety practices and is relied upon for assistance and guidance from jurisdictions throughout the nation.
The TxSSC welcomes applicants for the position of School Safety Readiness Specialist who have extensive experience within an organization that serves at the local, state, or federal level. This office-based position will be responsible for assisting in the statewide review, verification, and follow-up of multi-hazard emergency operations plans and safety and security audits for all K-12 districts, charter school districts, and community colleges in Texas to ensure compliance with state school safety legislation. This position will also assist with ongoing research and development of best practices related to school emergency operation plans, specifically the development of EOP online training, toolkits, and resources for Texas school districts. The goal of these systems is to improve the overall safety and security in our educational environments across Texas.
Job Duties:
A successful applicant will be able to conduct comprehensive reviews and verification of emergency operations plans for independent school districts, open-enrollment charter school districts, and public community colleges as required in Texas Education Code. This office-based position will also be responsible for ensuring the latest best practices in school safety and emergency operations planning are integrated into all systems developed by the TxSSC.
This position will work with a team of specialists under the leadership of the EOP Program Manager, the Associate Director of School Safety Readiness, as well as work collaboratively with the Training and Education division to develop training and resources that will assist school districts with successfully meeting school safety compliance measures.
Another key responsibility of this role is delivering virtual and in-person training to school districts within your assigned regional Education Service Center. This includes facilitating small and large group sessions, ranging from 15 to 150 participants, as well as providing one-on-one support.
You may also be required to offer critical, in-person assistance to districts at their locations when deemed necessary by the division program manager, associate director, or Center director. Travel is expected to range between 20-30 days per fiscal year, though this may vary depending on evolving Center directives and district needs. Additionally, this role may entail performing other duties as assigned to support the needs of the Center.
Additional Information to Applicants: This position is based in San Marcos, TX. If selected for an interview, it will be conducted in person.
