Required Qualifications:
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- 3+ years of experience in computer technical support within academic or research lab settings and project management.
- Experience with installation, operation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of scientific instruments.
- Strong organizational, record-keeping, communication, and supervisory skills.
- Ability to install, program, modify, and maintain integrated computer and research systems.
- Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware and software, used for researching, retrieving, and maintaining information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to explain technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a university environment and/or with scientific instrumentation.
- Experience working in demanding technical environments.
Job Description:
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is seeking a skilled and motivated Scientific Instruments Technician to provide technical support for our academic and research laboratories. This position involves installing, maintaining, calibrating, and repairing scientific instruments, supporting lab operations, and ensuring smooth functioning of laboratory systems and technology. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise, organizational skills, and strong communication abilities to support faculty, staff, and students.
Job Duties:
- Install, operate, calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair scientific research instrumentation.
- Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory support systems, including computer networking, compressed gas delivery, and uninterruptible power supplies, liaising with vendors or facilities as needed.
- Provide in-person and remote technical support for hardware and software.
- Install, configure, and maintain computers, laptops, printers, and other related peripherals.
- Maintain accurate inventory records of departmental hardware and software.
- Manage ordering and supply of shared departmental consumables for research and academic lab equipment.
- Support or manage departmental operations as needed.
- Monitor laboratory equipment, including calibration, inventory/records, and safety compliance.
- Interact professionally with stakeholders via phone, email, and in person.
- Engage in project management and execution of departmental initiatives.
