Who are we looking for?
We are seeking a Security Systems Architect to join Campus Services, Administrative Division.
The Security Systems Architect is responsible for the strategic planning, design, implementation, administration, audit and maintenance of the university’s access control, CCTV, lockers and mechanical security systems. These systems are crucial for ensuring the personal safety and security of staff, students, and visitors, as well as safeguarding buildings, assets, and information in accordance with the university’s policies. The incumbent is expected to possess a deep understanding of IT infrastructure and security systems, proficiency in programming and configuring solutions, and strong problem-solving abilities. The role requires proactive operation in an environment of constant change and technological progression, interaction with professionals from internal and external sectors, and sound judgment on university security-related matters. As a member of the Security and Emergency Management (SEM) leadership group, the position provides expert advice on the design of security systems to control security and safety risks across all QUT campuses. It plays a critical role in aligning security infrastructure with future campus developments, major facility fit-outs, and QUT’s broader digital transformation agenda.

What you need to succeed
- Education, training and/or experience equivalent to Postgraduate qualifications, or progress toward postgraduate qualifications, in security systems, AI customisation, or a related field with extensive experience in the planning, design, implementation, administration, and maintenance of security system solutions aligned with broader organisational strategies (e.g. digital transformation and campus development).
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex security projects, including the integration of advanced technologies such as AI-driven surveillance, access control systems, and IP-based cameras.
- Ability to translate system data into strategic recommendations to support proactive security management and continuous improvement.
- Proficiency in programming and configuring security solutions, with a demonstrated ability to maintain currency of industry knowledge, certifications and technological advancements to implement innovative security measures.
- High-level communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of internal and external clients and produce detailed project proposals, reports, and correspondence.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex situations quickly, determine appropriate actions, and implement corrective measures to enhance security and prevent system breakdowns.
- Proven experience in contract and resource management, including high-level experience in managing security system accounts and contracts, budget oversight, work order management, invoice processing, and negotiating and maintaining effective relationships with vendors and contractors.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to a team culture of continuous improvement, innovation, high performance, technical excellence and shared success through the mentoring and upskilling of colleagues.
