Pay: $73,000 – $75,000 (Pay range may vary based on geographic location)

Job Summary:

(>85%) The full-time Senior Clinical Instructor III is responsible to educate and supervise nursing students in classroom instruction and clinical and laboratory setting under the direction and support of the nursing faculty. This includes teaching in the areas in the nursing curriculum as assigned for 6-9 academic credit hours or the equivalent per year. This supporting role promotes the development of student professional nurses from Columbia College.

(<15%) Coordinates and manages the college’s skills lab and simulation center. The individual in this position will assure the effective and efficient operation of the lab, assess and provide for meeting program and student needs, and oversee the operation of high and medium fidelity technology to ensure safe and effective use of the simulation equipment. This supporting role promotes the development of graduate professional nurses from Columbia College.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform job duties in accordance with Columbia College’s vision, mission and values, and contributes to the development of the Nursing Department.
  • Practice superior customer service.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Display respect and civility to all constituencies in all communications.
  • Attend work timely and on a regular basis during the established hours of operation; work additional hours as business necessitates.
  • Teach both theoretical and clinical aspects of the nursing curriculum.
  • Function within established framework of organizational authority.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the nursing coordinator regarding classroom, clinical, laboratory, and other aspects of the curriculum.
  • Assess student performance in classroom and clinical settings including guidance and warning status (academic, clinical, professional) in accordance with school policies, and with direction from the Department Chair of the nursing program/Program Director or designee.
  • Guide, teach and evaluate the student’s performance in the classroom, clinical and laboratory areas by:
  • Assign students to appropriate patients in the healthcare setting.
  • Orienting self and students to participating agencies.
  • Assigning and grading clinical paperwork/VCEs etc. as designated by the lead course faculty.
  • Maintain ongoing evaluation of students within the clinical/laboratory setting using structured evaluation forms and anecdotal notes.
  • Conducting pre and post clinical conferences every clinical day.
  • Evaluate and conference students individually at established intervals and as needed (at least midterm and the conclusion of each clinical and laboratory rotation).
  • Communicate regularly (at least weekly) with the lead course faculty regarding student performance in the clinical/laboratory areas.
  • Provide objective information to the lead course faculty in making decisions regarding student performance in clinical/laboratory areas.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance and administration of all policies and procedures for the nursing program.
  • Participate in selecting, evaluating, counseling and guiding nursing students.
  • Maintain student records including class, clinical and laboratory data.
  • Recommend program purchases and nursing equipment.
  • Participate in systematic evaluation of the nursing program.
  • Participate in on-going development of the nursing program for professional organizations such as Missouri State Board of Nursing and National League of Nursing.
  • Assist in the planning special events pertaining to the Nursing Program.
  • Participate in nursing committees as assigned.
  • Participate in Columbia College activities as assigned.
  • Participate in developing nursing resources.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationship with cooperating agencies and clinical sites.
  • Participate in outside community organizations, communities and committees that pertain to nursing, education, health and welfare of the community.
  • Demonstrate professional growth and development through attending workshops, seminars, conferences, and other continuing education opportunities.
  • Ensure confidentiality of records of students and patients in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Develops, implements, updates, and monitors simulation lab policies, procedures, use, and operation.
  • Monitors and schedules use, signing out, and movement of simulation lab equipment.
  • Develops, presents, evaluates and refines scenarios for simulation experiences, utilizing role playing, props and dialogue to create a realistic learning environment.
  • Develops and implements clinical simulation to meet accreditation standards.
  • Continuously updates and refines simulation experiences based on identified needs and to serve as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation in classroom/lab activities.
  • Maintains the lab inventory, ensures the safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Monitors and assures appropriate standards of lab cleanliness, provides for equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement.
  • Orients instructors in lab procedures, location and use of materials, and operation of equipment.
  • Responsible for business development of the simulation lab, establishes community partners, develops income generated projects, seeks grants and other funding sources.
  • Oversees simulation lab information and technology support.
  • Works closely with college staff to appropriately integrate lab operations, obtain maximum utilization for the most efficient expenditure, and to moderate student costs.

Position reports to: Full time faculty and Nursing Department Chair and Director

Required Core Competencies and Professional Experience:

  • Ability to fluently read, write, and understand the English language.
  • Proficiency with the following, but not limited to: active listening; speaking; writing; critical thinking; judgment and decision making; monitoring; reading comprehension; time management; coordination; and management of personnel resources.
  • Proficiency for using a variety of computer and technology-related software and equipment, including Microsoft Office products and database systems.
  • Proficiency in using web-based technologies, including database systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, with or without direct supervision.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to function within the established pattern of delegated authority and responsibility.
  • Current license in Missouri to practice as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum of three (3) years clinical experience immediately prior to their appointment.

Preferred Core Competencies and Professional Experience:

  • Previous clinical instructor experience supervising and evaluating nursing students.
  • Specialized teaching areas require clinical experience in the course content area.

Required Level of Education: Master’s in Nursing

Required Professional Certification(s): None

Preferred Professional Certification(s): Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator In: Nursing, by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) or completed International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) simulation program

Other Requirements: Ability to satisfy, within the parameters set by the College and consistent with applicable federal, state and local laws, a criminal background check as a condition of employment.
