Job Description:
Coppin State University, a fully accredited institution and a member of the University System of Maryland, is accepting applications for a Senior Director of Experiential Learning for the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. Founded in 1900, Coppin is an urban, residential, historically black university offering 32 undergraduate majors, 14 graduate majors, and 15 certificate programs and 1 doctoral program; nearly 3,000 students are enrolled in day, evening, on-line, and weekend undergraduate and graduate courses.
The Senior Director of Student Experiential Learning provides strategic leadership and vision for all student experiential learning programs, including study abroad, exchange programs, undergraduate research, career development, internship opportunities, and service learning. This position is responsible for these programs' overall development, implementation, and evaluation, ensuring they align with the university's mission and goals. The Senior Director supervises office staff, including four direct reports and an indirect report and subsequent indirect staff. The Senior Director cultivates partnerships, manages resources, and ensures the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and partners participating in these experiences.
Responsibilities:
- Execute programs charged to the office and supervise the following staff: Director of Study Abroad, Coordinator of Service Learning, Coordinator of Undergraduate Research, and the Assistant Director of Career and Professional Services.
- Oversee risk management, policies, and procedures for all experiential learning services.
- Manage the budget for the smooth functioning of the programs, office supplies, and inventory for the execution of all services.
- Approve all expenses and ensure purchase orders are created, invoices are paid, and expense reports are filed.
- Collaborate with faculty on the development of undergraduate research opportunities, study abroad, exchange, and career opportunities for internships and jobs for students.
- Maintain office files and records, both physical and electronic.
- Manage timely mail and correspondence.
- Accountable for the office's website and updated content.
- Facilitate student engagement by recommending resources, conducting referrals, and supporting the overall services of the Eagle Achievement Center.
- Ensure policies and procedures are in place for smooth execution of the programs charged to the office.
- Work with partners and teams to market and promote the programs and their benefits to internal and external audiences, including current students, faculty, prospective students, donors, and potential partners.
- Serve as an additional point of contact for partners in study abroad programs, exchange programs, career pathways, and the university, providing accurate and timely information about program opportunities, application processes, and logistical details.
- Ensure accurate data about student records and program databases.
- Assist students with application processes, including document collection and submission. Maintain a thorough knowledge of resources, services, and events at Coppin to appropriately refer students.
- Recommend and assist in developing workshops to address gaps in resources and information for students.
- Assist in orientation presentations and processes to onboard to offerings of the experiential learning.
- Keep abreast of the legal guidelines regarding academic advising and registration, including those regulating confidentiality and privacy, such as FERPA, HIPAA, etc.
- Facilitate high-quality engagement that promotes academic success and student satisfaction for all undergraduate students, especially high-performing students.
- Participate in Eagle Achievement Center-sponsored programs and events.
- Assist in the execution of policies, procedures, reporting, and assessment of the assigned retention and success initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION
- Master's degree in school counseling, psychology, education, social work, higher education administration, or a closely related field.
- Doctorate degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of five years' experience in at least one of the areas of study abroad, exchange programs, undergraduate research, service learning, or career services.
- Experience in providing academic advising and support for traditional and non-traditional students, and experience working with exploratory/undecided students.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Student-centered, self-starter with working knowledge of academic support, helping skills, and coaching theories and practices.
- Strong critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as a team member and independently while developing strong collaborative relationships with colleagues, students, student services, and academic services units.
- Ability to exercise excellent professional judgment and discretion, making decisions on a regular basis that impact on student welfare and success.
- Ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize duties.
- Knowledge of student development and resources to promote student success.
- Ability to maintain highly confidential information.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs.
Conditions of Employment:
- Occasional evening and weekend academic advising and/or retention activities required.
- Occasional travel required for retention initiatives and professional development.
- Ability to lift and carry small parcels, packages, and other items as needed for outreach to student events.
