Job Description: The Department of Applied Social and Political Sciences in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Coppin State University invites applications for a full-time Contractual Lecturer for the 2025-2026 academic year. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach General Education Requirements and Dual Enrollment courses (i.e., ANTH 207 Cultural Anthropology, POSC 201 Introduction to Political Science, POSC 202 U.S. Government, and SOCI 201 Introduction to Sociology), and other courses within the department. Additionally, the candidate will have the ability to contribute to department research goals. A doctoral degree within a Social Science discipline (Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, Urban Studies, or a closely related area) is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate courses as assigned.
  • Maintain regular office hours.
  • Service on department, college, and university committees.
  • Collaborate with department faculty in providing co-curricular students experiences.
  • Commitment to scholarly research publication.

Teaching Excellence - 80%:

  • Teach on and off campus Dual Enrollment undergraduate programs course offerings, primarily General Education Requirements. Teach upper-level undergraduate program courses applicable to expertise. Teaching load is 4 courses per semester.
  • Teach with technology (i.e., Blackboard Learning Management System - Blackboard Ultra). Familiarity with using Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Scholarship and Research - 5%:

  • Where applicable, collaborate with faculty on scholarly research, grant-writing, and publication.

Service - 5%:

  • Assist with department and college projects and initiatives.

Discipline Specific Duties - 5%:

  • Support internal and external partners by serving in a subject matter capacity in efforts to stay current in the field.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

  • A Doctoral degree within a Social Science discipline (Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, or a closely related area) is required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least three (3) years of teaching in higher education preferred.
  • Research and publications with relevance to urban communities.
  • Experience with Course and Learning Management Software preferred.

KNOWLEGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Excellent written communication and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Effective convergence of community engagement and instructional activities.
  • Experience with Course and Learning Management Software (i.e., Blackboard Ultra, PeopleSoft, MS Teams, and Panopto) in support of on-campus and online coursework, preferred.
  • Some evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Demonstrated excellent written communication and public speaking skill.
  • Demonstrated commitment to higher academic and professional standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and support all constituents involved.
  • Demonstrated excellent planning, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, with diverse groups of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct, manage, and report assessment and evaluation outcomes.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills (e.g., planning and scheduling of meetings/events; problem-solving; data and materials development management and organization).
