About This Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Technical Officer (Animal Science) to provide high-level technical support for teaching and research in animal science. This role involves supporting practical classes in animal science and related disciplines, supervising facilities used by the Animal Science group, and maintaining and operating laboratory and field equipment. You will also provide specialist technical and OH&S advice to students and staff. While primarily part of the Animal Science technical team, you may occasionally support teaching and research in other disciplines.

Key responsibilities will include

  • Coordinate and deliver technical support for animal science practicals, including developing and updating teaching materials and course content.
  • Support teaching delivery by assisting with tutor training and providing guidance to students on experimental design and laboratory techniques.
  • Manage teaching and research facilities, animals, equipment, and resources, including procurement, maintenance, and access coordination.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, legislative, and university requirements, including OH&S practices, inductions, and operational standards.

About You

  • Completion of a Bachelor degree with specialisation in animal science or related disciplines with subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training.
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge in the field of animal science and animal management and experience in large animal handling, management and sampling, and small laboratory animal management and sampling.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Australian Code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes - 8th Edition, relevant guidelines, legislation and general community expectations.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency working with undergraduate and postgraduate students and supporting their learning needs with appropriate technical and scientific advice and training.
  • Ability to forward plan, prioritize tasks and communicate effectively with colleagues to ensure the timely delivery of practical classes.
  • High level skill and experience using the Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
  • Knowledge, or the ability to acquire knowledge, of the University’s policies and procedures relating to Occupational Health and Safety, the Risk Assessment database, and the on-line Purchasing system.
  • Open class C Queensland driver’s licence (manual).
  • Licensing and training for operating off road vehicles including 4WD would be desirable.

Appointment to this role is subject to the successful completion of relevant pre-employment checks, which may include verification of the right to work in Australia and other role-specific requirements such as mandatory immunisations (including Q Fever vaccination). This may also include checks relating to gender-based violence matters or other integrity and conduct requirements.

You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.
