About This Opportunity

We are seeking highly motivated, trade-qualified artisans or experienced technical specialists to join our team as a Senior Technical Officer. You will play a key role in supporting innovative teaching and research. In this dynamic position, you will bring your expertise in design and fabrication to help deliver high-quality educational outcomes for undergraduate and postgraduate students, empowering academic success across a range of disciplines.

You will contribute your subject matter expertise to our Innovation Group workshop facilities, while fostering a collaborative, hands-on learning environment. This is an exciting opportunity to share your skills, support knowledge transfer, and help build a vibrant community of confident makers.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Core Technical: Guide and manage students and staff in a hands-on learning environment, supporting the use and maintenance of manufacturing equipment. Provide technical advice, training, and ensure safe, reliable workshop operations while contributing to engaging training programs and events.
  • General: Foster a student-focused, hands-on environment that encourages creativity and experimentation. Support daily operations, client engagement, and workshop activities, including consultations and safety training. Contribute to teaching, mentor junior staff, and assist with outreach initiatives such as the Mobile Makerspace program.
  • Safety: Maintain high workplace health and safety standards through inductions, training, supervision, and compliance processes. Develop risk assessments and standard operating procedures, support a proactive safety culture, and contribute to continuous improvement, along with other duties as directed.

About You

  • Completion of a relevant technically focused degree or recognized trade qualification with subsequent experience in coordinating activities or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training (examples could include professional teaching qualifications or learning design).
  • Expertise across a broad range of fabrication techniques for teaching and research.
  • Strong capability in both manual and digital fabrication methods.
  • Proficiency in CAD, 3D printing, 3D scanning, reverse engineering, and makerspace tools.
  • Experience in industrial or educational workshop/makerspace environments.
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills with the ability to plan, prioritise, and adapt.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including clear documentation.
  • Commitment to university values, with an interest in teaching, training, and mentoring others.
