Basic Function/Overview: THIS IS A TEMPORARY, HOURLY AS NEEDED POSITION WITHOUT PERMANENT STATUS. This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments as the need arises. You will be contacted by the hiring manager should the department/division be interested in scheduling an interview.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent.
  • Teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record.
  • Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis.
  • Maintain scheduled office hours.
  • Effective written communication with students.
  • Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities and remain current on relevant industry trends.

Minimum Qualifications:

A. The minimum of one of the following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language or Interpretation and two years of professional experience; OR
  2. Associate’s degree in American Sign Language or Interpretation and six years of professional experience. OR
  3. The equivalent (must request an equivalency review in the application), OR
  4. California Community College credential, “Valid for Life” (no longer issued), authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline; refer to Ed Code § 87355 (If meeting qualifications with this credential, a copy of the valid lifetime credential must be submitted with the application.);

The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member’s teaching assignment. Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master’s degree.

AND

B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Communicate effectively to students orally and in writing.
  2. Ability to communicate curriculum meaningfully for students with diverse backgrounds.
  3. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of our students (California Code of Regulations, title 5 § 53022).
  4. Member of field related organization (i.e., ASLTA, NAD, RID, etc.).
  5. Native or near-native fluency in American Sign Language.
  6. Evidence of strong DEISA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice, and Anti-Racism) principles.
  7. Ability to effectively teach in an online environment.
