Job Description:
Function of Position:
The MCC STEP (Science and Technology Entry Program) serves students at local middle and high schools. The Program Specialist, in collaboration with school faculty and staff, is responsible for providing, organizing and implementing services and activities related to STEP at participating schools and at the College. The Specialist reports directly to the Project Director for STEP at MCC.
This is a temporary, grant funded position that may be renewed annually contingent upon availability of grant funding and performance reviews. This position is eligible for paid time off and benefits.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
Primary Functions:
- Recruitment, selection, and onboarding of program participants
- Manage a caseload of approximately 100-110 students at assigned partner school(s)
- Provide individual and group advisement, including the development of personal and academic goal plans
- Monitor and track each student's academic progress, offering additional support as needed
- Design and implement college and career readiness programming, including academic and personal development workshops, cultural and educational field trips, shadow opportunities, and internships
- Collaboration with faculty and staff at partner schools and the College to design and implement enrichment activities in STEM, health-related fields, and licensed professions
- Travel with, transport, and chaperone STEP students on field trips, conferences and college tours
- Plan, coordinate, and attend Saturday College and Summer Bridge Program (July-August)
- Organize information sessions and workshops for parents/guardians
- Assist students with applications to jobs, internships, and other opportunities
- Assist students and families with applying to and preparing for higher education
- Implement and oversee tutoring program at partner school(s)
- Supervise program support staff and interns at partner school(s) and during programming at the College
- Serve as the liaison between Middle/High Schools and the STEP Director
Secondary Functions:
- Data collection and tracking for reporting and monitoring purposes
- Assist and support parent groups at the Middle and High Schools
- Represent MCC and MCC STEP in a positive manner at the Middle/High Schools
- Attend local, regional and state STEP conferences and meetings
- Foster current and new networking opportunities that can benefit students in STEP
- Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by the STEP Project Director

Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Earned Associate's degree or higher in Education, or a STEM discipline from a regionally accredited higher education institution
- Minimum of three years working with middle and/or high school students in educational environments
- Success with and commitment to supporting an inclusive environment. Evidence of respect for and experience working with students with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs
- Proven successful advisement and mentoring experience
- Experience with developing and implementing curriculum and/or academic activities
- Experience facilitation personal or academic sessions to pre-college students
- Proven ability to work effectively independently and with a team to reach desired outcomes
- Experience and knowledge with community outreach and partnerships
- Ability to work on Saturdays, some evenings and weekends
- Ability to travel to middle and high schools on a regular basis
- Ability to chaperone and/or transport STEP students traveling to regional state and national field trips, including conferences and college tours
- Have a valid NYS Driver's license
- Ability to pass the NYS Fingerprinting Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:
- Five years' experience working with middle and/or high school students in educational environments
- Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently
Additional Information:
Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has an expected pay of $52,000 per year is based on these mentioned factors.
MCC offers a Flexible Work Policy for benefit eligible employees. Types of flexible work arrangements include flextime/staggered shifts, remote work/telecommuting and compressed work schedule. The availability of flexible work arrangements varies by division, department, and position, based upon business and operational needs. Limitations to flexible work arrangements are outlined in the official policy.
Prohibition of Remote Work Outside New York State: Remote work locations outside New York State are not authorized by the College due to out-of-state tax and regulatory implications. In limited circumstances, prompted by business or operational needs, the College may approve requests to work remotely outside of New York State, on a short term, temporary basis.
