GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the AS/SDSU Competitive Sport Coordinator and Head Coach, the Sport Club Associate Coach for the Rugby team will be responsible for assisting with the coordination and operations of the San Diego State University 7s and 15s Rugby program. The Associate Coach will collaborate closely with the Head Coach to develop practice plans, oversee assistant coaches during practices and competitions, and implement team development strategies. This position plays a key leadership role in player development, program organization, and ensuring competitive excellence. The position averages 20-25 hours per week and requires availability during the fall and spring seasons for mornings, evenings, and weekend travel. The Rugby Associate Coach is responsible for ensuring program quality, enforcing rules, policies, and procedures as outlined in the Sport Club Handbook, and assisting with coaching duties at a high level. The successful candidate will comply with all policies established by Associated Students/SDSU, the Sport Club Program, and USA Rugby while serving as a positive role model for student-athletes and the university.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions
- Complies with all job expectations as outlined in the Associated Students/SDSU Sport Club Coaching Agreement.
- Collaborates with the Head Coach to design and implement comprehensive training plans, including skill development, conditioning, tactical systems, and video analysis.
- Provides leadership and guidance to Assistant Coaches, ensuring consistency in instruction, safety, and communication.
- Assists in player recruitment, selection, and development to ensure a strong and competitive roster.
- Helps coordinate practices, training sessions, competition schedules, and team travel logistics.
- Ensures compliance with all Associated Students/SDSU, Aztec Recreation, and USA Rugby policies and procedures.
- Maintains safety as the top priority for all team activities, ensuring that practices and events begin and end on time.
- Supports team fundraising and alumni engagement initiatives in coordination with team officers.
- Assists with team equipment oversight, maintenance, and inventory.
- Represents the team in meetings with other university personnel, regional organizations, and partner programs.
- Reports any policy violations or safety issues to the supervisor immediately.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Customer Service and Collaboration
- Establishes and maintains positive relationships with A.S., Aztec Recreation, and University departments.
- Represents the team and Associated Students/SDSU professionally at all times.
- Fosters a positive team culture, emphasizing sportsmanship, inclusion, and leadership development.
Safety
- Ensures all operations prioritize participant and staff safety, following the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and Code of Safe Practices.
- Reports and documents all accidents, incidents, or unsafe conditions promptly.
- Ensures equipment and facilities are in safe working condition, reporting any issues immediately.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum & Preferred Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of two years of coaching experience at the collegiate or competitive club level preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in a team setting preferred.
- Knowledge of Aztec Recreation programs, facilities, and policies required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications and the Aztec Recreation website required.
License & Certification:
- First Aid and CPR/AED certifications required (online courses excluded).
- Valid California Driver's License and proof of automobile insurance required.
- World Rugby Level 1 Coaching Certification
Trainings:
- Anti-Harassment training (must be completed with 30 days of hire)
- Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
- Gender Awareness Training (Must be completed with 30 days of hire)
- Must complete the California Defensive Driving Course.
- Attend all mandatory Aztec Recreation/Sport Club meetings and trainings.

- Must be able to work with confidential information and exercise discretion.
- Must maintain professional and positive relationships with staff, athletes, and peers.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills required.
- Ability to work independently and follow projects through to completion.
- Commitment to uphold all Associated Students/SDSU and Sport Club Program policies and regulations.

- Strong background in coaching, strategy, and technical skill development.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to mentor Assistant Coaches and foster teamwork within the coaching staff.
- Sound judgment and professionalism in high-pressure situations.
SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a part-time hourly position. Flexibility and willingness to work up to 25 hours per week; employee schedules vary according to team needs throughout the academic year.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The position involves both indoor and outdoor work environments and may require exposure to varied weather conditions. Work may include standing, walking, and physical activity for extended periods.

RELATIONSHIPS
Inside the Organization:
- Reports to Competitive Sports Coordinator.
- Collaborates with Head Coach, Competitive Sports Supervisor, and Sport Club Staff.
- Provides leadership to Assistant Coaches.
Outside the Organization:
- Works with university personnel, sport governing bodies, and peer institutions.
EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY
This is a part-time hourly position at $30.00-$32.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
