Job Summary
The Senior Manager, Entrepreneur In Residence will serve as a critical connector between academia and industry, overseeing both the scientific progression of novel technologies and their strategic commercialization. Interested applicants must present prior experience and methodologies that align with key responsibilities outlined below. This position will manage complex projects, involve cross-functional teams, and develop executable business plans and strategies that maximize the technologies and emerging innovations into the private and commercial sectors. The Senior Manager will report directly to the Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences.
Responsibilities
This role demands a proactive, results-oriented, individual who has achieved moderate progress in prior positions and creates (if not thrives) in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment and possesses a deep understanding of both technical research and business development.
Under minimal supervision, responsible for planning, organizing, directing and/or controlling all aspects pertaining to research development functions of assigned department's internal and external customer service, staffing and financial management operations pertaining to areas including (but not limited to) proposals, applications, compliance, contract negotiation, budgeting and disbursement, and monitoring and evaluation. Acts as a catalyst between the department and its customers and staff to ensure continuity and quality of service and care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical writing. Documenting research findings, methodologies, and experimental results clearly and concisely. Capable of managing complex information for stakeholders (technical and non-technical).
- Coordinates documentation requiring scientific knowledge and strong analytical skills that ensures technologies in commercialization pipelines meet standards of compliance with academic, government and industry.
- Problem solving and planning. Drive the development and execution of milestone driven business and strategic plans for technology commercialization and business growth.
- Collaborate closely with the academic research team to understand scientific innovations and translate them into viable products and services.
- Project and innovation management. Manage technology development projects, timelines, and cross-functional teams to ensure milestones are met. Requires the use of prototyping, data analysis, using and implementing program management tools.
- Industry knowledge. Brings industry expertise which identifies, evaluates, and pursues partnerships, licensing, and funding opportunities with industry, investors, and government agencies.
- Work closely with the Technology Licensing Office (TLO) and the Utah Venture Hub (UVH) to inform product and business strategies.
- Market research. Proactive in determining commercial pathways, decision making and investments for advancing technologies.
- Effective time management. Able to drive results given multiple tasks and manage timelines focusing on deadlines and results. Able to set reasonable goals and demonstrate progress.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.
Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.

Preferences
- Prior outcomes achieved in medical device licensing and technology transfer
- Publications in fields of medical devices, medical engineering, science, business or related discipline
- Demonstrated abilities in methodologies and outcomes in commercialization
- Advanced degree in engineering, science, business, or related discipline.
- Minimum 4+ years of industry experience in research & development, technology commercialization, or business development roles emphasizing technical proficiencies.
- Proven track record of successfully moving early-stage technologies through development to market launch.
- Strong understanding of technology landscapes, regulatory requirements, and funding mechanisms.
- Exceptional leadership, project management, and communication skills foster the exchange of ideas and accelerates problem solving.
- Experience working in academic-industry partnerships or startup environments highly desirable.
- Ability to collaborate, build and maintain strong professional networks with diverse specialists, scientists, engineers, marketers, industry stakeholders, investors, and government entities.
- Critical thinker, detail oriented, adaptable, interpersonal, and organized.
