Staff Associate/Senior Staff Associate (of Programming, Events and Education)

The Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center (CAC), a university-wide center based at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, seeks a Staff Associate who has interest in population aging and healthy longevity to build one of the CAC's key core areas: Programming and Education.

The primary role is two-fold: to build disciplinary and interdisciplinary research connections at all levels of Columbia's scientific community and (2) to devise and administer core education and science programming that highlights the CAC's leading position both within the field nationally/internationally as well as across the entirety of Columbia University with the ultimate goal of positioning CAC as a primary aging research hub.

The individual in this role at the Center will work closely with the Center Director and leadership on the research development of the CAC, demonstrate efficiency and diplomacy in advancing the Center internally and externally on behalf of the Director, and oversee the Center's strategic initiatives and partnerships.

The individual will autonomously cultivate and maintains scientific relationships across all levels of Columbia research community and advances the mission of the Center by:

  • Raising the Center’s profile on the Morningside, Manhattanville and Medical Center campuses through research initiatives, events, partnerships and collaborative programming as well as through communications duties such as writing news items for the Center’s website and generally keeping the website up to date.
  • Organizing the Center's various speaker series and events and defining desired audiences for each in collaboration with the Center Director and CAC faculty.
  • Administering the Center-initiated University Seminar "The Future of Aging Research", a quarterly dinner seminar co-chaired by three faculty members from disciplines representing biological, behavioral and contextual aspects of aging and a core faculty of over 50 tenure-track academic members; managing the seminar’s student rapporteur.
  • Administering any pilot research and/or fellowship programs, student practicum fellowships and student awards that CAC initiates.
  • Partnering with the CAC's ILC-USA on the administration of CAC's signature press training program and maintaining relationships with its alumni.
  • Working with development to cultivate and steward potential project donors, sponsors and/or advisory committee.
  • Maintains website, listserv and targeted audience mailing lists; creates Center’s newsletter and manages Center’s social media profile in collaboration with Columbia Mailman’s communications team.
  • Building the Center's relationship with student bodies and trainees at the undergraduate, graduate (masters and doctoral students), and postdoctoral levels and serving as administrative lead on the "Health of an Aging Society" certificate for MPH students and advisor to students’ aging organization.

Within the CAC, this associate collaborates seamlessly with the Director, leadership, faculty, Center Administrator and financial team. Within the Mailman School of Public Health, this associate works across academic and administrative departments and collaborates with office of education, communications, careers and field placement, etc. This associate maintains close relationships with development and communications departments. This associate also builds and maintains relationships with other Centers and Departments outside of Columbia Mailman.

Qualifications include demonstrated work experience in programming, research coordination, event management, communications roles; excellent oral and written communications skills; expertise with technology (platforms include Office suite, listservs, RISE Digital, photoshop/Canva, Zoom, web CMS such as Drupal, etc.) and excellent project management and team management experience.

  • Staff Associate I - Bachelor's degree in public health or scientific research field and 4 years experience preferred
  • Staff Associate II - Bachelor's degree in public health or scientific research field and 4 years of experience recommended
  • Staff Associate III - Bachelor's in public health or scientific research field and 4-6 years of experience
  • Senior Staff Associate I - Bachelor's degree in public health or scientific research field and 6 - 10 years of experience
  • Senior Staff Associate II - Bachelor's degree in public health or scientific research field and 10+ years of experience
  • Senior Staff Associate III - Bachelor's degree in public health or scientific research field and 15+ years of experience.
  • Master's degree preferred. For Sr. Staff Associate I, II and II, Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Subject to business needs, we may support flexible work arrangements. Options will be discussed during the interview process.

Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1st, contingent upon performance and funding.

The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.

Projected start date will be January 1, 2026, or open until filled.

Columbia University benefits are offered with this Officer of Research appointment.

Depending on candidate qualifications appropriate level will be determined.

Salary Ranges:

70,000-94,000 for Staff Associate Level I

75,000-101,000 for Staff Associate Level II

80,000-120,000 for Staff Associate Level III

85,000-120,000 for Sr. Staff Associate Level I, II and III

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
