Job Summary
Auburn University's Office of Information Technology (OIT) is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer - Linux & Web Infrastructure to serve as a lead technical expert responsible for the design, implementation, security, and ongoing operation of enterprise Linux platforms and web infrastructure services.
This position blends deep Linux systems engineering expertise with web infrastructure and platform engineering, supporting highly available, secure, and scalable services across on-premises and cloud environments. The engineer will play a critical role in Auburn's modernization initiatives, ensuring the University can host, secure, and deliver services from anywhere to anywhere while maintaining enterprise reliability and compliance.
The successful candidate will operate with a high degree of independence, provide architectural leadership, and collaborate closely with infrastructure, security, application, and campus IT partners.
Working onsite is a requirement of the job. May be approved to work up to 3 days hybrid remote in local area with supervisor's approval upon completion of probationary period.
Essential Functions
- Design, implement, and maintain enterprise Linux systems supporting web, application, and infrastructure services
- Engineer and support web infrastructure platforms, including Apache and NGINX, and integrations with enterprise load balancing (e.g., F5 or equivalent)
- Architect and manage highly available and scalable web and application hosting platforms
- Ensure Linux and web platforms meet security, compliance, and performance standards, including patching, hardening, vulnerability remediation, and certificate management
- Support and evolve hybrid infrastructure environments, spanning on-premises systems and public cloud platforms
- Provide technical leadership for modernization efforts, including cloud readiness, containerization, and automation
- Manage core infrastructure services such as DNS, IP addressing, firewall coordination, SSL/TLS certificates, and system monitoring
- Develop and maintain automation and configuration management to improve reliability, consistency, and operational efficiency
- Participate in backup, disaster recovery, and cyber-resilience operations, ensuring recoverability of Linux and web-hosted systems
- Create and maintain clear technical documentation, standards, and operational runbooks
- Serve as a technical consultant to campus IT and application teams; mentor junior engineers
- Participate in after-hours maintenance and on-call rotation as required
- Handle systems containing sensitive or regulated data in accordance with University policies

Minimum Qualifications
Systems Engineer (MA46)
High school diploma and 11 years of relevant experience OR
Associate's degree and 7 years of experience OR
Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience
Sr. Systems Engineer (MA47)
Bachelor's degree and 6 years of relevant IT experience in the administration of distributed computer systems.

Minimum Skills and Abilities
- Advanced troubleshooting ability across Linux, applications, and infrastructure components
- Strong understanding of enterprise architecture principles and systems lifecycle management
- Ability to translate business and application requirements into secure, scalable technical designs
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities and complex technical projects
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse technical teams
- Commitment to delivering reliable, secure, and high-quality services

Minimum Technology Skills
- Enterprise administration of Linux operating systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux or equivalent), including:
- OS installation, configuration, hardening, patching, and performance tuning
- Shell scripting and automation
- System logging and monitoring
- Experience administering web platforms such as Apache and/or NGINX
- Experience managing SSL/TLS certificates, encryption, and secure communications
- Working knowledge of DNS, HTTP/S, LDAP, NTP, SSH, SMTP, SNMP, and related infrastructure protocols
- Experience with virtualized environments (e.g., VMware vSphere or equivalent)
- Experience integrating Linux systems with Active Directory and LDAP
- Familiarity with storage protocols such as NFS, SMB, or iSCSI
- Experience with backup and recovery systems in an enterprise environment
- Basic familiarity with Windows Server environments sufficient for integration and interoperability
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- In-depth experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux in large-scale environments
- Experience supporting enterprise web infrastructure at scale, including high availability designs
- Experience with automation frameworks such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or similar
- Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Podman, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift)
- Experience with enterprise monitoring and log analysis platforms (e.g., ELK, Splunk, Wazuh)
- Experience supporting systems integrated with SAN or enterprise storage platforms
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and networking (Azure and/or AWS)
- Experience working in higher education or large enterprise environments
- Experience with cybersecurity best practices, vulnerability management, and zero-trust principles
- Prior experience mentoring technical staff or serving in a technical lead role
