Position Summary Information

Position Purpose

The ASL tutor will assist students with the development of ASL skills and abilities to support their academic goals. This is a part-time position and the incumbent must be willing to work on a flexible schedule.

Description of Duties

Assist students with the development of ASL skill abilities that will support their academic goals. May provide subject specific assistance, but primarily will assist students with developing ASL skills outside of class. Design and develop learning activities to assist students in enhancing their ASL skills. Assist in developing activities for Signfiy Club meetings and monitor the club’s activities. Conduct language lab sessions for ASL classes. Provide academic assistance to students who are taking ASL course either in a group or individually. Report to the ASL/English Interpreting program (including coordinator) and other ASL instructor(s) as relevant. Maintain lab attendance and submit weekly lab reports and evaluation requested by the instructor. Create an atmosphere of respect and support with students and colleagues. Serve as a role model for students to help them develop positive attitudes towards language learning. Attend tutor training workshops and meetings with the ASL instructors. Maintain confidentiality about student information and communication content, as appropriate to the program.

Minimum Requirements Profile

Master’s degree is strongly preferred, especially those with degrees in teaching ASL, Deaf Studies, or Interpreting. Bachelor’s degree with extensive relevant experience will also be considered. Responsible, mature, fluent in ASL, knowledge of Deaf Culture; and excellent interpersonal skills.

Experience working with college students or adults is require. Excellent communication skills in ASL is required. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations is required.

Background Clearances

Offers of employment are conditional, pending successful completion of the background clearances mandated by Act 153 of 2014 and Board of Governors Policy 2014-01-A: Protection of Minors. In order to qualify for a provisional appointment, the Applicant Acknowledgement Consent Form, Provisional Hire Form, Pennsylvania State Police and Justifacts portion of the clearance process must be successfully completed prior to your start date.
