The Humanities Division and the Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago invites applications for a part-time Lecturer in Igbo during the 2024-25 academic year.

The selected candidate will have part-time teaching opportunities to teach a three-quarter sequence in introductory Igbo. The classes may be taught virtually. Responsibilities include planning and teaching language courses using a highly interactive communicative approach, holding regularly scheduled office hours, and the preparing and grading of assignments and testing materials. Additional responsibilities include designing a Canvas site for the course and responding in a timely fashion to communication for students, colleagues, and supervisors. 

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and Service Employees International Union. The per-course salary for academic year 2024-25 will be at least $7,538. This position is not benefits eligible.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in African languages or literatures, applied linguistics, or a related field, be a native speaker of Igbo or possess superior proficiency in Igbo according to ACTFL guidelines, and have at least one year of experience teaching Igbo at the college or post-secondary level. Preference will be given to applicants with a Ph.D. or equivalent in African languages or literatures and/or an advanced degree in second language pedagogy/acquisition or applied linguistics.

  • A 15-20 minute teaching video of a remote or in-person class (preferably of a first-year language level; if no recording of the candidate’s teaching is available, a mock-teaching video is also acceptable)
  • And the names and contact information of three references whose recommendation letters may be solicited.
