This is a 9-month, full-time, benefit-eligible position, and is supervised by the department head of Construction and Operations Management. The appointee must show potential to teach effectively and mentor undergraduate students on career opportunities in the heavy construction sector by fostering industry relationship that strengthen learning, placement and professional growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a level of performance consistent with faculty standards at SDSU for teaching and advising, service and outreach to the profession. The Professor of Practice will cover heavy construction topics that include estimating, equipment & systems, and construction management topics in cost estimating, building systems, finance and/or risk management. Knowledge of contemporary project delivery methods including CM at Risk, Integrated Project Delivery and emerging PM models will be critical for maintaining our ABET accreditation as well as preparing our students for post-graduation careers.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 


  • Sponsorship is not available for this position, must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Earned bachelors degree in construction management, engineering, engineering technology or closely related field.
  • 10 years full-time construction industry employment with at least 5 years experience on heavy construction projects using US standards.
  • Knowledge of contemporary project delivery methods including CM at Risk, Integrated Project Delivery and emerging PM models.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and be willing to travel.
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 


  • Graduate degree in construction, engineering, business administration, architecture, law or other relevant field; 
  • Professional licensure or construction-related certification; 
  • Demonstrated potential to teach effectively and/or mentor undergraduate students on careers in the heavy construction industry;
  • Additional years of domestic construction industry experience.

The Construction and Operations Management Department is one of five departments in the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering serving 1500 undergraduate and graduate students. The 13 faculty member COM Department serves 350 students in its undergraduate programs, which include Construction Management, Construction Technology, Operations Management, Electronics Technology and graduate programs in Operations Management and Engineering. 

 

The Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering has benefitted from substantial investment by its stakeholders in the past 15 years resulting in new buildings, state-of-the-art teaching and research labs, and renovated classrooms. The five academic units are Civil & Environmental Engineering, Construction & Operations Management, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Mathematics & Statistics, and Mechanical Engineering. Engineering Extension, SD LTAP, the EDA University Center, Image Processing Lab provide outreach and services to the state and region.

 

As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of South Dakota State University is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.

 

Jackrabbits Athletics competes as an NCAA Division I member with membership in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the Summit League and the Big XII for wrestling.
