Job Duties:

The Department of Theatre & Dance at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse invites applications for a full-time academic staff member at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor beginning in Fall 2026. This is a renewable non-tenure track instructional position. The primary responsibilities of this position are to work as the Scene Shop Supervisor/Assistant Technical Director and teach Theatre Appreciation. Other courses are possible. Service and creative activity/research are expected.

First review begins January 19, 2026. Applications received prior to the first review date will receive full consideration, and the search will continue on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Under general supervision of the department chair, successful candidates will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses and advising students. In addition to preparing for and holding classes, teaching involves maintaining currency in the content area related to the teaching assignment, evaluating students’ work, assessing student outcomes, providing regular and substantive feedback on student work, maintaining appropriate records, and holding office hours.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in scenic construction and scene shop management. This position, under the supervision of the Technical Director, will coordinate technical and production details as required for productions and other activities in UWL Theatre and Dance spaces. The position is also responsible for supervising day-to-day work of student shop staff; preparing budget estimates for time, labor and materials as designated by the Technical Director; drafting and revising technical drawings based on the scenic design. May serve in other production roles if appropriate.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with department faculty and staff to develop teaching strategies relevant to the discipline
  • Develops and designs curriculum and instructional material relevant to a course of instruction
  • Contributes to the development of teaching and learning scholarly work including publications and presentations
  • Contributes to the strategic development of curriculum and academic content through various mediums to ensure the integrity of the educational mission of the work unit
  • Advises students on academic and career direction within a specific field of study
  • Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including assessment of student performance
  • May supervise student employees involved in development or delivery of instruction

Department: Theatre & Dance

Required Qualifications:

  • MFA in theatrical design/production or related area required by time of first personnel review.
  • Strong scenic construction and technology background.
  • Experience managing students and/or personnel.
  • Knowledge of and experience maintaining safety standards per OSHA.
  • Experience with theatrical rigging systems and working at height.
  • Ability to draft using AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience supervising a scene shop.
  • Knowledge of tool maintenance and repair.
  • Experience managing budgets and purchasing materials.
  • Strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and initiative.
  • Experience with computer numerical controlled routers (CNC), including file preparation.
