Teaching Associate/Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Inpatient/Outpatient - Neurological Surgery

The Department of Neurological Surgery is looking to hire Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in the Teaching Associate faculty title (ARNP or PA credentials).

The Inpatient/Outpatient Neurological Surgery Advanced Practice Providers (APP) are members of the interdisciplinary team that includes attending physicians, fellows, and residents, providing care to patients and families across the continuum of care for patients treated in Neurological Surgery. The successful applicant(s) will be responsible for providing neurosurgical services in the outpatient, inpatient, and OR settings, independently and collaboratively with appropriate privileges. This is a 1.0 FTE (Full time) position with four 10-hour shifts per week and weekend coverage for the UW Montlake and Northwest campuses.

Responsibilities:

  • Outpatient
    • Initial and ongoing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the patient’s medical and psychosocial status.
    • Pre surgical care: surgical clearance, H&P, coordination of care with anesthesia, medicine and inpatient team for complex cases
    • Post-operative care: post-operative clinic visits, medication management, pathology follow-up and coordination of care with consult services as needed.
    • Triage urgent and routine patient messages and implement plan of care.
    • Interpret results of lab and diagnostic tests, consult with attending physician.
    • Communicate plan of care with referring physician.
  • Inpatient
    • Participate in daily morning and afternoon rounds
    • Daily Care: evaluating and managing floor patients, writing daily progress notes and formulating/implementing plans
    • Coordinate patient care with other services (endocrinology, internal medicine, neurology, ENT, ID)
    • Facilitate family meetings and participate in goal of care discussions as appropriate
    • Participate in social work rounds and manage coordination for discharges.
    • Procedures: APP will be trained on the following procedures: Lumbar Punctures, Drain removal (Subgaleal, JP, hemovac), External Ventricular Drain placement and removal, Lumbar Drain placement and removal, Shunt/Ommaya tapping, Nasal endoscopy
  • Education, QI, and Research (10% of FTE)
    • Monthly Quality Improvement (QI) meetings and ongoing quality improvement projects. APPs are expected to actively engage in research and QI projects
    • Monthly case presentations and Journal clubs that are led by the APP with Physician support/mentoring
    • Provides clinical mentoring to APP students and interns
    • Assist with orientation and training of new APPs to the service
    • Attend team educational conferences (M&M, surgical grand rounds, tumor boards)
  • Work Hours: 1.0 FTE position, 4x 10’s per week. Day and swing shift, may include weekend coverage. On Call: No on-call coverage

Requirements:

  • Nurse Practitioner: Masters or Doctorate Degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing AND Washington State Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner License with prescriptive privileges, BLS, ACLS
  • Physician Assistant: Licensure as a Physician’s Assistant in the State of Washington, BLS, ACLS

The Department of Neurological Surgery at UW Montlake and Northwest campuses provides patient care services for a broad range of neurological diseases and disorders. The Department is also the primary referral center for patients with complex neurological conditions in the five state WWAMI region, as well as the tertiary referral center for national and international patients. In addition, the Department has one of the premier academic training programs in the world and maintains an active, cutting-edge research program ranging from basic science and translational research to a broad array of clinical trials. The base salary range for these positions will be $10,000 - $12,834 per month ($120,000 - $154,008 per year), commensurate with experience, discipline, and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Our salaries are bench marked based on the AAMC scale. Other compensation associated with this position may or may not include Startup, Relocation Incentive/Moving Allowance Administrative supplement for a defined administrative role, or Productivity Incentive.

Teaching associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1 - June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms. Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

The Anticipated start date is April 1, 2025.
