Technical Assistant VI

Position Summary

Columbia University Libraries is currently seeking applicants for the position of Technical Assistant VI in the Preservation department. Established in 1974 with responsibility for preserving Columbia University Libraries’ collections in all formats and genres, the Preservation Division provides a comprehensive program to prolong the existence and accessibility of the collections for current and future students and scholars. The Division coordinates with other units in the Libraries to ensure preservation of all Libraries’ content. Reporting to the Manager, Digital Imaging Lab, the Technical Assistant VI will digitize a variety of rare, fragile, or brittle materials including bound volumes, loose manuscripts, photographic, and three-dimensional library media. The incumbent will also perform post-processing and QC of digital image files. Tests: Portfolio of photography work maybe requested.

Responsibilities

  • Creates digital images using a variety of digital cameras and other imaging equipment.
  • Uses and maintains sophisticated digital imaging equipment with good judgment and technical expertise.
  • Uses small/medium/large format digital cameras and scanning equipment.
  • Uses independent judgment regarding how best to handle and support fragile materials for digital conversion.
  • Use imaging, color management, database and spreadsheet software.
  • Collaborates with the Conservation Department on matters of safe handling of rare materials and creating stable supports for rare and fragile books and art objects.
  • Performs project and image quality control and generates image derivatives.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma and/or its equivalent, and six months’ relevant experience required.
  • Demonstrated photographic experience using 35mm, medium, and large format digital cameras required (portfolio may be requested).
  • Experience with imaging and color management software and database, and spreadsheet programs required.
  • Experience using Macintosh or Windows operating system required.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, while using expertise and judgment.
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work carefully with rare and fragile materials.
  • A high level of visual literacy is needed in order to judge color, lighting, and exposure in photographic digital images.
  • Strong customer service skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with computers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to recognize needs and prioritize identified tasks.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of colleagues and library users.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 40lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA or BFA in photography or BA/BS in other field and relevant experience.
  • Visual arts background desired.
  • Experience using a flatbed scanner or other scanning equipment preferred.
  • Photography copywork experience desired.
  • Experience working in a library is preferred.
