"Technical Director"

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with event managers/creative teams/producers, including, but not limited to, designers, production staff and crew, electricians, carpenters, stage managers, production assistants, wardrobe personnel, student workers, appropriate faculty, and outside clients/vendor personnel.
• Plan and produce detailed production schedules with Morgan State University and/or the promoters/producers of licensees and their technical staff.
• Ensure strict adherence to schedules and deadlines
• Lead the technical design and execution of all productions, including set, lighting, sound, and media components.
• Create and manage the Performing Units' (i.e., Theatre Arts, Musical Theatre, Opera, MSU Choir, MSU Bands) season performance and production calendar along with the Coordinators.
• Manage the upkeep, inventory, and improvement of technical equipment and facilities (performance spaces and shops)
• Ensure all technical operations comply with safety regulations and best practices. A working knowledge of OSHA is a must.
• Stay informed about industry trends and innovations, incorporating them into the program and technical practices.
• Research the cost, purchase methods, and delivery of all production materials and their construction in order to ensure efficient operations
• Manage and strictly control the production budget as set by the Director while abiding by the University's financial systems and protocols.
• Collaborate with and support the director and designers engaged by the Fine Arts Center
• Jointly responsible, with the Technical Manager, for ensuring that designs comply with licensing and health and safety regulations.
• Organize and lead regular production meetings
• Book set builders, painters/scenic artists, and crew in liaison with the producer and Technical Manager
• Collaborate with the heads of the performing units of the MSU Department of Fine & Performing Arts (e.g, MSU Choir, MSU Bands, Musical Theatre at MSU, Theatre Morgan, and Opera at Morgan) to ensure that their performances are well-produced with quality production values
• Assimilate the artistic and financial priorities of the Murphy Fine Arts Center while ensuring the safe and successful mounting of productions or presentations.
• Be available throughout the run of major productions to troubleshoot issues/problems.
• Be flexible enough to be available late evenings and weekends.
