The Department of Urology at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Temporary) Database Developer.
About the Opportunity
The Department of Urology is seeking a temporary Database Developer to assist with the design, development, and implementation of a structured research database to support ongoing clinical and translational research initiatives. This position is limited in duration (approximately 2-3 months) and focused on building foundational database infrastructure to support investigator-driven projects.
The role will involve working closely with faculty investigators and research personnel to extract, organize, validate, and structure clinical data from Epic Clarity and related systems into a secure and research-ready database.
What You'll Do
- Develop and implement a secure research database infrastructure to support clinical research initiatives.
- Provide customized datasets to investigators using SQL and Epic Clarity.
- Maintain and apply expertise in SQL and other data extraction/visualization tools.
- Utilize healthcare classification systems (e.g., ICD-10, LOINC) to support accurate data retrieval.
- Identify relationships, trends, and variables that may impact research findings.
- Develop data models, metadata tables, views, and related database structures.
- Design and develop data marts to simplify reporting processes for researchers.
- Assist in generating statistical datasets for analysis (e.g., SAS, R, or related tools as needed).
- Develop and maintain documentation, data dictionaries, and procedural standards.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements (including HIPAA).
- Perform quality audits to ensure data accuracy, completeness, and appropriate use.
- Design and implement structured data extraction processes from clinical, billing, and administrative systems.
- Collaborate with system architects and IT stakeholders as appropriate.
Length of Assignment: Approximately 3 months
Work Hours: 15 Hours per week
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Applicable field.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in information technology related field/role.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to extract, organize, validate, and structure clinical data from Epic Clarity and related systems
- Knowledge of design, development, and implementation of a structured research database
- Knowledge of building foundational database infrastructure to support investigator-driven projects.
- Database and artificial intelligence working knowledge preferred.
