General Information:

The Department of Computer Science at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor to begin August 2026. We are committed to cultivating a welcoming environment for our faculty, staff, and students, and we value candidates who will be both impactful teachers and impactful scholars. Preference will be given to applicants at the Assistant Professor level. Exceptional candidates at the Associate Professor level will also be considered.

The JMU CS department is a vibrant and supportive community with 33 full-time faculty members teaching in the Computer Science and Information Technology programs. The Computer Science program has approximately 700 undergraduate majors and 60 minors, as well as an online M.S. Degree in Cybersecurity with approximately 60 students. The IT program has approximately 250 majors. We are dedicated to supporting a culture that balances excellence in teaching, small class sizes, and opportunities for faculty and student research. The department sponsors many active clubs and organizations including Women in Technology, Robotics, Cyber Defense, and a student ACM chapter. We have an outstanding undergraduate Teaching Assistant program that helps novice students feel welcomed and supported regardless of their prior experience.

Our students are actively involved outside the university as well, taking part in ACM SIGSCE, regional and national cyber defense competitions, programming competitions, the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, and the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing. The Department is an active member of the NCWIT Academic Alliance and one of the original Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. Duties and Responsibilities:

Applicants from all areas of specialization are encouraged to apply. We especially welcome candidates with a background in Systems, Software Engineering, Theoretical Computer Science, AI, or Cyber Security. Candidates should demonstrate ability and interest in providing high-quality undergraduate teaching in the context of a liberal arts university.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with the potential to develop and sustain an active, undergraduate-oriented research program. A Doctorate (Ph.D., D.Sc., etc.) in Computer Science or a closely related field at the time of employment is required for this position. Preference will be given to applicants who can provide high quality teaching at the undergraduate level with the potential to develop and sustain an undergraduate-oriented research program.
