Description
WILLIAMS COLLEGE, Williamstown MA 01267. The Department of Asian Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Williams College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Chinese, beginning in the fall of 2026. We seek someone who can teach all levels of Chinese language courses as well as disciplinary courses in the candidate's specialization, which can include second language acquisition, formal or applied linguistics, cultural studies, literature, or related fields. The teaching load will consist of four courses per year, as well as meaningful participation in the Winter Study curriculum which is during January.

The successful candidate will join colleagues in a vibrant and supportive academic community. The Department of Asian Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers three major tracks: Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Languages and Cultures. The Chinese major requires four years of language study and the East Asian Languages and Cultures major requires three years of language study. The department also offers a dual language option under the East Asian Languages and Cultures major track. More information about the department can be found at https://www.williams.edu/dallc/. We offer mentoring and professional development opportunities, including participation in the college's professional development programs of First3 and External Mentoring Program for Pre-Tenure Faculty, access to a number of online NCFDD resources, and support through the newly established Rice Center for Teaching.

All offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a background check. Further information is available here: http://dean-faculty.williams.edu/prospective-faculty/background-check-policy/.

For full consideration, please submit the application by September 30th, 2025.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a Ph.D., or all requirements for the Ph.D. degree, by July 1, 2026. The ideal candidate will have native or near-native fluency in Mandarin, the ability to teach at all levels in our language program, strong experience teaching at the college level in North America, and strong promise of excellent scholarship in their field. Since the person is expected to team teach Chinese language courses with Language Fellows, experience in teacher training is also desirable.

Application Instructions
Applications should include cover letter, CV, a list of three references who have agreed to write on behalf of the candidate and submit the letter in a timely manner (letters will be requested and due in late October from applicants who advance to the semi-finalist stage), syllabus of a disciplinary course in the candidate's specialization (either in English or Chinese), and an unedited video (maximum 15 minutes) of the applicant teaching a Chinese language class, accompanied by a detailed lesson plan. In your cover letter, please speak to your ability to work effectively with a student population that is broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. Please indicate the link to the video recording in a Word document and upload all application materials to Interfolio (https://apply.interfolio.com/169464). Questions about this position can be addressed to Professor Man He, Chair of the Department of Asian Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (mh11@williams.edu).
