Detailed Job Description

The Department of Architecture in the Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) at Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor for its Master of Architecture program.

The job entails significant work in development and maintenance of the program and the promotion of student success. We pride ourselves in having a collegial environment, therefore our faculty has a strong commitment to collaboration within a small department framework. Collaboration is a central and essential component of this position. Successful candidates will be committed to working closely with colleagues, contributing to shared initiatives, and engaging in team-based teaching and potentially scholarship. While independent expertise is valued, faculty are expected to participate actively in collective efforts and to align their work with departmental and institutional goals.

Specific responsibilities for this position include the following:

Teaching
This faculty's primary responsibility is to teach required courses in the curriculum. Typically, this includes one 6-cr design studio and one 3-cr lecture course within the Integrated Building Systems course sequence during two academic terms per year in both the campus and online settings. Additionally, this faculty member will help advise thesis students and teach an additional elective course every other year. The M Arch program is offered on campus as well as online and all faculty are assigned to teach in both realms and modalities. Please note that the Online Master of Architecture program runs during fall, spring, and summer terms; therefore, an opportunity exists to teach and advise students during the summer term via overload or teaching load shifting.

For this position, the technical area of expertise sought is Building Sciences/Technology, which includes all or some of the following: architectural materials and assemblies, site, structural, MEP, building performance analysis depending on the specific Integrated Building Systems course taught. This faculty member will teach Building Sciences/Technology content in corequisite lecture and studio courses; therefore, the lecture and studio courses assigned to the successful candidate will be in related content areas.

Scholarship
RIT recognizes five forms of scholarship: scholarship of discovery, scholarship of integration, scholarship of application, scholarship of teaching, and scholarship of engagement. Furthermore, the Department of Architecture uses the 2017 ACSA "Research and Scholarship for Promotion, Tenure, and Reappointments in Schools of Architecture" white paper to evaluate faculty research and Scholarship. Faculty are free to pursue their scholarship of choice that fits within these parameters. Collaboration with other RIT colleges is encouraged.

Service
Service is expected to be at the departmental, college, institute, and community level. The program and college are small, therefore it is common for architecture faculty to serve on numerous departmental level committees, e.g. admissions, curriculum, faculty searches, etc. Additionally, all faculty serve as academic advisors to the Department of Architecture students.

Individuals must possess a passion for teaching, a commitment to sustainable design principles, and a willingness to collaborate with colleagues. We are seeking an individual who has the ability and interest in contributing to a community committed to student-centeredness; professional development and scholarship; integrity and ethics; respect, innovation and flexibility; and teamwork and collaboration.
