Tenure Track Faculty Position in Public Health (Open Rank)

Located in the vibrant community of Walla Walla, WA, Whitman College is home to an intellectually diverse, dynamic, and supportive community of some 500 staff and faculty serving roughly 1,500 students from the local region and across the globe. With exceptional students, accomplished faculty and staff, and engaged alumni, Whitman College continues to build on its national reputation for academic excellence as one of the top undergraduate, liberal arts colleges in the country.

We seek applicants for an open rank tenure-track position in Public Health beginning August 2026. Applicants must have clear expertise in public health and a Ph.D. or other doctorate degree in public health or a related field. Applicants should have demonstrated interest and excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.

The successful candidate will offer courses in Public Health, including introductory and capstone public health courses, undergraduate-level courses in epidemiology and/or health policy, and additional public health-related courses in their areas of specialization. Their courses will also contribute to the College's general education requirements. The standard annual teaching load is five courses.

The search committee welcomes expertise in a range of public health topics, including global health, community health, tribal and indigenous health, health disparities, social determinants of health, health communication, epidemiology and biostatistics, environmental health, occupational health, emergency management, health policy, and nutrition.

An interdisciplinary group of Whitman faculty are creating a Public Health program that builds on decades of interdisciplinary health-related education and the mentoring of Whitman students in public health interests and careers. The successful candidate will play a vital leadership role in this academic area, contributing courses and helping shape the formation of this new program. The candidate will be well supported by a steering committee and will receive a course reduction in their first year to support developing the introductory and capstone courses.

The College provides a generous pre-tenure sabbatical program and professional development support for both research and teaching. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential to sustain an active scholarly or creative research agenda and to participate in faculty governance, mentorship, or other forms of service in ways that fit their interests and talents.

Whitman College is committed to fostering an inclusive learning community that values diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives. In the cover letter, candidates should describe their interest in teaching undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all levels of instruction. In doing so, candidates should address how their classroom and scholarly practices will advance equity and inclusion in the learning environment.
