Toth-Lonergan Visiting Endowed Chair in Interdisciplinary Studies

The Center for Catholic Studies under the auspices of the Office of the Provost at Seton Hall University invites applications for the Endowed Toth-Lonergan Visiting Chair in Interdisciplinary Studies for the Spring 2026 semester.

This position supports Seton Hall’s commitment to a robust Catholic Identity, deepening interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship, and ongoing faculty development in mission.

The ideal candidate will have a publication and teaching record that demonstrates an expertise in the thought of Bernard Lonergan, a comprehensive understanding of the Catholic philosophical and theological traditions, research interests informed by that expertise and understanding, and an enthusiasm for sharing this knowledge with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of the Toth-Lonergan chair is to support faculty development in mission integration. This includes:

  • Presenting at and facilitating monthly Praxis Program meetings with an interdisciplinary community of faculty and participating in planning meetings
  • Mentoring Praxis participants as needed
  • A signature Toth-Lonergan lecture for the university community

In addition, the Visiting Professor will commit to one of the following:

  • Advancing a scholarly project related to the thought of Bernard Lonergan, or
  • Offering one course in Lonergan studies or a related field such as philosophy, theology, Catholic studies, law and morality, or business ethics.

Required Qualifications:

Doctorate in Philosophy, Theology, or related discipline with doctoral work and/or a record of scholarship within the Catholic intellectual tradition broadly and the thought of Bernard Lonergan in particular. AOS: The thought of Bernard Lonergan, AOC: Open; with a preference for Catholic theology, philosophy, business ethics, law and morality

Demonstrated evidence of nationally recognized scholarship in relevant discipline

Ability to teach philosophy and/or theology courses

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience and commitment to communicating Lonergan’s thought, philosophy, theology to non-specialist and/or non-academic communities

Demonstrated leadership in working with other faculty to support interdisciplinary teaching, research, goals, and activities

Salary Grade: FA01 - Faculty

Exempt/Nonexempt: Exempt

Physical Demands: General Office Environment

Special Instructions to Applicants:

This position is for the Spring 2026 semester. Compensation will be $30,000.

(3) Abstract of approximately 300 words describing the proposed scholarly project (if the candidate elects for this option rather than teaching a course).
