General Description

Upward Bound Summer Instructors are responsible for developing curriculum materials and implementing a course of instruction in speciality area(s) for high school students. Specialty areas include but are not limited to: Math; Science; Foreign Language; History; English; and Art. Instructors are NOT required to have current state certification.

In addition, Summer Instructors are responsible for attending an in-service training workshop prior to the start of the summer program.

Minimum Education/Experience

Applicants for the position of Instructor in Upward Bound Summer programs must hold at least a Bachelor's degree in Specialty area or a closely related field. Specialty areas include but are not limited to: Math; Science; Foreign Language; History; English; and Art.

OR

Applicants for the Instructor position must possess a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and demonstrate at least two years of teaching experience in Specialty or a closely related field. Specialty areas include but are not limited to: Math; Science; Foreign Language; History; English; and Art.

OR

Applicant must have earned a Master's degree with at least 18 hours in designated specialty area. Specialty area include but are not limited to: Math; Science; Foreign Language; History; English; and Art.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work as team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology to develop exciting, multidisciplinary content.
  • Previous experience working with high school students preferred.
  • Positive interpersonal skills to effectively relate to students who are first generation, low socioeconomic individuals.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Sedentary work: The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
    This position requires the person to frequently move about the classroom and other areas to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.
    This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, administration, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position.
    Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
    This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.
    This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer and other office or classroom equipment to perform the essential functions of the position.
    This position requires the person to use upper and lower body to exert force up to 10 pounds to push or pull materials or equipment.
  3. VISUAL ACUITY:
    This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.
  4. WORKING CONDITIONS
    This position performs the essential functions in an indoor classroom or office setting.

Required Training

Instructors must attend in-service training workshop(s) prior to the start of the summer program.

In addition, instructors must complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC's established safety and health procedures and practices.

Work Hours: Each instructor will receive a designated work schedule for each of the specialty area(s). Classes are held Monday through Thursday, typically between the hours of 8:30am and 3:30pm. Class periods are approximately one hour and fifteen minutes in length. Start times, end times, and duration of class periods are subject to change prior to the first day of classes. Special events may be held Monday through Thursday.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)

  • Develop curriculum materials and implement course of instruction in specialty area(s) for Upward Bound students.
  • Participate in training session(s) as scheduled.
  • Prepare, develop and implement a minimum of one pre-test and one post-test per course to assist in student evaluation.
  • Prepare a final written evaluation on each student (e.g. grade, performance evaluation, growth/change, etc.)
  • Implement and enforce classroom rules and expectations to create a conducive learning environment.
  • Proactively address any disruptive behavior or conflicts that arise among students.
  • Utilize various strategies such as positive reinforcement, redirection, and clear communication to maintain order and promote student engagement.
  • Participate in out-of-class activities with students as agreed upon with TRIO Director.
  • Attend designated events (for example, the Program Achievement Awards reception) where students and parents are present.
  • Provide leadership for students in preparing a final day activities demonstration, and/or a display for parents, relatives and community view.
  • Maintain required completed paperwork and submit all reports prior to the end of the program.
  • Adhere to established TRIO Upward Bound policies and procedures.
  • Provide effective instruction to high school students in a classroom format during the designated work schedule.

  • Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures
  • Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.
  • Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.
  • Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC's established safety and health procedures and practices.
  • Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
