Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
With a focus on college readiness, Precollege programs aim to prepare and serve students and families across North Carolina to achieve their academic potential. These programs create opportunities for students to prepare, explore, and apply to college. Through Precollege programs, students can develop academic skills, conduct research, investigate careers, build a portfolio, experience college life, and prepare for college enrollment.
Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The primary purpose of the UNCW Seahawks Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Program Academic Coordinator is the overall planning, development, and coordination of guidance, counseling and testing for the UBMS students. The Academic Coordinator is involved in the evaluation of effectiveness process, related to UBMS Program and is specifically responsible for accurate record-keeping of pertinent student and Program data. It is necessary that the Academic Coordinator collaborates with the program staff members towards curricular programming and its effective implementation. Additionally, this position, along with a focus on the recruitment of student participants, calls for the realization of strong academic and personal counseling services provided for each of the UBMS student participants. It is expected that such a realization will be achieved through relationship-building and coordination with the UNCW campus resources offices (Academic Affairs, Precollege Programs, Admissions, Student Advising, Scholarship & Financial Aid, Career, Counseling, etc), local High School Administrations & Counselors, fellow Upward Bound and TRIO Programs, and other community agencies/organizations.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in sociology, psychology, counseling, education, social work, mathematics, english language arts, life sciences, or related areas.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- Master's degree in sociology, psychology, counseling, education, social work, Mathematics, English Language Arts, Life Sciences, or related areas
- At least 1 year of experience with federal TRIO programs
- Teaching experience in secondary school or similar programs for diverse, income eligible/first-generation college students
- Experience providing case management and advising/counseling
- Competent in managing virtual meetings and classroom space
- Experience overcoming barriers confronting federal Talent Search (TS) students of income eligible and/or first-generation college qualifications
