Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Recruitment and Admissions within the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, the Undergraduate Recruitment and Portfolio Coordinator assumes significant responsibility for recruiting undergraduate art and architecture students and stewarding relationships with key referral contacts. This position partners with the WashU Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Sam Fox School undergraduate chairs to implement strategic recruitment plans that align with the overall undergraduate recruitment goals of the University. The primary goal for this position is to increase the number of referrals, visits, applications, and yields to the Sam Fox School undergraduate programs.

The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at WashU in St. Louis is a unique collaboration in architecture, art, and design education within the context of an internationally recognized research university. Comprising the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design, the College and Graduate School of Art, and the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum, the Sam Fox School offers a depth of professional education in conjunction with one of the premier university art museums. The School has a strong commitment to social justice, environmental justice, and community-based work.

Must be able to travel by ground and air to various locations across the United States.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Recruitment Outreach and Cultivation

  • Develop and deliver on-campus and virtual presentations to prospective students and families and to high school art and design departments.
  • Plan and manage travel for portfolio and career days across the country (requires significant travel September through December).
  • Organize and run the St. Louis National Portfolio Day on WashU’s campus.
  • Make regular contact with high school art and design teachers and guidance counselors nationally and internationally; establish and maintain ongoing relationships with a core group of key contacts.
  • Plan and implement all programming for Sam Fox School visit days and other in-person and virtual programs involving prospective students, admitted students, and their families.
  • Oversee a well-developed on-campus tour program for the Sam Fox School.
  • Ensure timely and effective follow-up with prospective students throughout the entire recruitment process.
  • Coordinate and participate in the evaluation and scoring of all student portfolio work for consideration for admission; coordination includes selection and supervision of a combination of part-time graduate employees or other faculty or alumni volunteers.
  • Work closely with the University’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions to assist with the selection of the incoming undergraduate class for the College of Art and the College of Architecture.
  • Coordinate and staff scholarship selection committees for named scholarships within the College of Architecture and the College of Art.

Recruitment Planning and Evaluation

  • Work closely with School leadership and the WashU Office of Undergraduate Admissions to produce an annual, goal-driven undergraduate recruitment plan for the Sam Fox School that outlines key strategies, participants, and resources required.
  • Partner with Sam Fox School Office of Communications to develop effective digital and print media strategies for prospective student and family audiences.
  • Build interest and awareness of art, architecture, and design careers among high school students.
  • Assemble and coordinate a group of current students to serve as Sam Fox School stewards to support recruitment activities in multiple capacities.
  • Evaluate each year’s efforts quantitatively and qualitatively and provide annual assessment reports to School leadership.
  • Ensure timely processing of all recruitment expenses.

Pre-college Programs

  • Collaborate with the Special Programs Manager to plan and implement year-round recruitment for Sam Fox School pre-college programs.
  • Assist in evaluating and selecting students for admission into Sam Fox School pre-college programs.
  • Assist in the selection, training, and supervision of part-time pre-college program assistants.
  • Assist in the successful delivery of Sam Fox School pre-college programs during the summer months.
  • Establish strong relationships with pre-college program participants and encourage applications from this pool to apply to the Sam Fox School.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve on school or university committees as requested to further recruitment and enrollment efforts.
  • Assist with graduate recruitment activities in the absence of other assigned personnel or during peak visit periods.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and/or experience may substitute for minimum education.

Work Experience: Relevant Experience (1 Year)

Driver's License: A driver's license and good driving record are required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in art, design, or architecture.
  • Enthusiasm for the undergraduate student experience and a strong commitment to the School's recruitment effort.
  • Ability to identify and establish professional connections on behalf of the School and maintain ongoing relationships with key national and international contacts.
  • Some knowledge about art and architecture.

$21.17 - $32.85 / Hourly
